Gall Bladder is the organ for making decisions. In harmony it helps us to become original thinkers. It purifies the old so the new can come forth. Gall Bladder, if not in harmony, can cause chaos in any one or more of the body function energy as we can see on page 40 in Text 2. This condition can be caused by digestive and mental overdoing. In this way, Gall Bladder affects our immune system. 3rd Depth can devastate the body if it’s out of harmony. It will cause total depletion of body energy. The texture of 3rd Depth is fluffy – nobody home – for people who have a hard time finding their place in space. Any time you’re feeling weak, your pelvis isn’t open. 3rd depth isn’t able to receive the Source energy from the 6th Depth. Holding the 8s will help to open the pelvis. If 4th depth isn’t doing its job of cleaning and purifying, we can’t return to Source to renew. And if Gall Bladder is out of harmony and can’t bring the Blood Essence into form then it starts to back up and burdens the body, creating disharmony.

Liver is a continually flowing source, responsible for the smooth movement of fluids in the body and the smooth functioning of all of the bodily functions. The liver is our largest internal organ and has over 500 functions that it oversees and performs. The liver processes and cleans the blood, filters toxicity, and is our body’s chemical factory. Liver is the General who oversees everything.

Paracelsus said: “Liver is throughout the body.”

Mary said: “Liver is the closest thing to the Creator that we know. Liver is for people who have lived a hard life – for the person who looks emaciated. It has to do with aging. We are the ‘liver’ of our life.”

3rd Depth helps the eyes on many levels. It is the source energy for sight, and on a higher level, the source to be able to really see reality and not live in illusions. Paracelsus said: “The power of sight does not come from the eye.” Liver is related to the astrological sign of Pisces. Pisces rules the feet, helps us to come down to earth. Pisces is also the master of the overview. It’s the last sign of the Zodiac, everything dissolves back into Pisces to be re-imagined before the cycle starts once again as the essence and texture start to take on more tone, as it starts again with Aries and the Lung Function energy.

A triad represents relationship and balance. The number 3 has a beginning, middle, and end. If we complete the two circles of 3, 3 becomes 8, the infinite story of Creation in which we are made, again and again.

The 20, 21, 22 flow is our Mind Specialist. It helps us with our perception, is for all brain stress, and will change the way we think. It also helps all illusionary stresses. This flow helps calcium to function in the body, and helps our thyroid function. The 20, 21, 22 flow helps us to unlock the back by pulling energy down the front. It pulls down stresses in the head, neck and chest. It clears the 9s, and when the 9s are clear we have a clear mind. Safety Energy Lock 9 has a relationship with 3rd Depth and the liver. Safety Energy Lock 20 helps our universal consciousness – to really know myself. Safety Energy Lock 20 is located at the level of the 3rd eye – seeing through the eyes of the Creator – our everlasting eternity and immortality. Safety Energy Lock 21 is our cosmic consciousness and helps us to bring about our understanding and awareness. it will help take away the weight of the world, as well as our body weight. Safety Energy Lock 22 is a master number – complete and all inclusive, and harmonizes all of the elements. The organ flows all take a rest at the 22s, then depart into their own pathways. All of the mental, emotional and physical forces come together here as One. Safety Energy Lock 22 harmonizes the 144,000 functions that we are and helps us to adapt and adjust to life.

3rd Depth, when out of harmony, has to do with anger, selfish motivations and “unwholly” desires; in harmony, will bring about good will, kindness and love.

3rd Depth is the beginning of a new day, starting with Gall Bladder at 12:00 midnight – not yet visible. Aquarius rules the ankles and influences the Gall Bladder energy – going from the spiritual plane to the horizontal plane, bringing the spiritual into material. Our life on this earth, our waking from the dream, brings us from the unconscious to the conscious experience through the breath, beginning with the lung and moving through the Order of Creation. Aquarius represents the power of thought as it takes on form. Gall Bladder is the carrier of the essence of life into this body. The life force essence is transported in the blood by the liver. 3rd Depth holds our emotions. Liver and Gall Bladder are responsible for smoothness in the body. Where there’s smoothness, the energy can flow freely. If there’s anger in the body, then anger flows throughout the body. 3rd Depth harmonizes anger, frustration, temper, indecision, irritability, resentment, long-held thoughts of hatred, revenge, and fear.

In Jin Shin Jyutsu we have our impersonal universal Trinity consisting of Main Central, Supervisor, and Mediator; and our personal Trinity of Main Central, and Right and Left Supervisor. 3 is about relationship, and disease is the loss of relationship. Paracelsus defines disease as an intermingling of the 4 elements. The integration of the energetic body with the physical body is our health.

3rd Depth has a very close relationship to the Mediator, which is born at Safety Energy Lock 3. The Mediator gives us our wings, bringing rhythm and motion. 17, 18, 19 are the Safety Energy Locks located on the pathway of the Mediator, and they live in 3rd Depth. 3rd Depth, the source for this body, harmonizes the Mediator and brings about the movement and relationship between Heaven and Earth. It is simply a reflection of infinite Source of the 8th Depth – infinite rhythm, infinite harmony – the energy of Creation. Carl Jung said: “There is an unfolding of the One to a condition where it can be known – Unity becomes recognizable.”

3rd Depth is ruled by the planet Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system. Jupiter is associated with all gods of generosity and abundance. Jupiter brings us expansion, growth, and has to do with activity, movement, freedom, and relationship, which become blood, and blood goes everywhere. Blood Essence is what carries information in the body. Jupiter is about vision and perception, and holds the desire for meaning and understanding.

3rd Depth begins at Safety Energy Lock 16. 16 is the foundation of all human activity and helps us to move through life. 17, 18, 19 connect left to right and right to left. Our 16, 17, 18, 19 flow is the bridge which helps to harmonize and connect the Mediator with the Supervisor – the connecting link of the Trinity flow into the activating principle of the Mediator. This is a soothing, calming 3rd Depth flow. A preventer and healer of all critical conditions, this flow helps to prevent scary labels. This flow helps all stroke conditions (the sooner you can get to the person after a stroke, the better), clears the chest – for all breast projects, lymphedema and helps with post amputations. Safety Energy Lock 16 is our bridge from the invisible to the visible, our foundation for life and all of our undertakings. It’s our active intelligence. It helps us to break down existing forms for new ones. It renews. Harmonious music is nourishment for our emotional nature. Safety Energy Lock 17 represents harmony, Safety Energy Lock 18 melody, and Safety Energy Lock 19 rhythm. Safety Energy Lock 17 is our natural intelligence, our intuition. It collects our solar force energy that comes into our solar plexus so our nervous system can function. Safety Energy Lock 17 is the leader of relaxation in the body. Safety Energy Lock 18 is our cosmic consciousness and helps our personality. Safety Energy Lock 19 is our collective intelligence, which, when in harmony, brings us perfect balance. This flow connects our intellect with our emotions. The connection of mind-body is inherent in this flow.

The 5th Essence: 3rd Depth

Quintessence defined by the dictionary means the purest, most essential element of a thing. 3rd Depth is the harmonizer and the binder of the 4 elements, keeping them in order. 3rd Depth is Wind. In Chinese medicine, because Spring is a time of sudden and rapid change, it is considered the season of Wind. Both the season and climate correspond to Wood, also represented by 3rd Depth (trees and living matter). Wind is unpredictable; it disturbs the location and direction of things. Wind can steal into the body, just as it finds its way through the cracks and crevices of doors and windows. It creates a draft which disrupts circulation.* We can better understand why 3rd Depth can be the cause for chaos in the body. You can only see Wind through movement. Wind is also referred to as the ethers, the vehicle of Spirit – intuitive energy.

Mary said that the 3rd Depth is the quintessence, essence energy which supplies the body with energy of the 6th Depth. The essence (life force) is transported in the blood, invisible but goes everywhere. 3rd Depth is the psychic energy binding the soul to the body, bringing our being into manifestation. It’s the energy for creation, the first in the source and the last to manifest in the body. 6th Depth is the soul coming into the body between the umbilicus and the pube through the 3rd Depth coccyx area. The coccyx receives vibration, acts as an antenna, and carries it throughout the body.

3rd Depth lives in both the invisible and visible world at the same time. It begins in the unmanifest, as the soul enters from 6th Depth into the 3rd Depth, and as the essence and the texture take on more tone, it moves through the Order of Creation, densing down and becoming visible in the manifest.

3rd Depth is represented by the number 8 – infinity forever – 8 being the impersonal Source in the heavens, and 3rd Depth our personal source coming into manifestation on Earth. 3 is a Trinity. Everything in nature comes from a triad. We are made up of ectoderm, endoderm, and mesoderm. A cycle of transformation is birth, growth, and death. There are three divisions of time – past, present, and future. A Buddhist teaching is that thoughts become words, and words become deeds. Looking at it through the lens of Jin Shin Jyutsu, thoughts represent Spirit – 13, words represent Mind – 14, and deeds represent Body – 15. Another 3 are the three kingdoms of mineral, plant and animal.

A Trinity is comprised of two opposites and a third element that brings about a whole. This is our first geometrical figure, the triangle. A triangle is a symbol of divinity and reflects most spiritual traditions. A triangle is a building block in everything that is built by nature and by man.

A revealing evolutionary footnote to our development as human beings and to our understanding of the Umbilicus energy, is to look at the starfish. The starfish has its mouth and its nose – one opening – at the center of its being. This opening acts much like an umbilicus, it opens and closes to receive food, water, nourishment and remove waste. On the organ flow level, we are the 5-pointed star, (the imprint of the starfish) within the 6th Depth circle, with our center radiating from behind the umbilicus. (Created out of the stardust of the astrological signs, the 5-pointed star in turn creates the 12 thoracic vertebrae and eventually manifests as the organ flows.) The physical center of our body is the umbilicus or the navel (on the 5-pointed star level) in the center of the abdomen. It is through this center that the diaphragm energy enters the Main Central Vertical Harmonizing Flow from which the 5-pointed star radiates, on the ALL COMBINED ENERGY – TIMING, page 43, Text 2, at the hour of 8 p.m. So the Diaphragm energy is directly linked to the Main Central Vertical Harmonizing Flow through the umbilicus.

In utero, the umbilicus connects the fetus to the mother for sustenance, while babies after birth reveal the power of the diaphragm. If you have ever spent time watching a baby, they breathe from the diaphragm. Their little bellies softly round and fill with the breath of life.

The Diaphragm Function Energy brings in the “capital B” Breath of life (6th Depth), so that our “little b” breath of life can expand the lungs (2nd Depth) and expand our life. As we breathe, the diaphragm moves down and flattens on the inhale and goes up into the chest cavity as we exhale, massaging the organs of the chest and abdomen in this process. It is through our diaphragmatic breathing that our organ flows and our organs get aerated and energized. Meanwhile, our Umbilicus Function Energy is keeping us connected to the universe, through invisible threads.

These 6th Depth organ flows, the Diaphragm and Umbilicus, are the overseers of all the organ flows. They are the archetypal father and mother; they have the power to motivate and the compassion to connect. They are action and love. They have the ability to perceive the big picture and the awareness of how to use that perception.

The most amazing thing to me about Jin Shin Jyutsu is that the truth is there on every level – spirit, mind and body. The philosophy and the physical experience of Jin Shin Jyutsu are one and the same. We are the microcosm inside the macrocosm; we are a little picture inside the big picture; we are the 8th Depth (Infinity) within the 6th Depth (unity). Our physical being is truly the manifestation of the elements of the universe and our Diaphragm and Umbilicus Function Energy are powerful components in that process.

Diaphragm, action, pump bellows, the father of all flows, is the power which gets it all moving. But the Diaphragm, besides being an energetic flow is a real, physical muscle or sheath, which separates the organs of the chest cavity, from the organs located in the pelvic girdle (separates the 13s from the 15s).

The heart, surrounded by the lungs, nestles atop the diaphragm. And with every breath the heart and the lungs are gently massaged. The abdominal organs, the liver, the gall bladder, the stomach, the spleen, the pancreas, the kidneys and the intestines all reside below the diaphragm. Thus the diaphragm divides and keeps intact the organ manifestations of these different realms and at the same time the esophagus, the aorta and the inferior vena cava, pass the breath of life and the food of life from the realms of heaven (manna) through the diaphragm to the domain of earth. The dictionary definition of diaphragm is: “a septum or partition, esp. the muscular partition which separates the cavity of the chest from the abdominal cavity in mammals, the midriff, any membrane or partition that separates one thing from another.” The meaning of dia, a prefix, is through or across, and phragma means a fence. So, diaphragm is through or across a fence. The diaphragm sheath or muscle, right at the level of the 14s, on the MAN level, supports heaven and brings heaven, the 13s, down to connect to earth, the 15s, through man, the 14s. The diaphragm truly brings it all down, and at the same time is a partition which keeps the separate realms intact.

Umbilicus, invisible, intangible, mother of love, the mother of all flows, the nurturer, the connector, the warmth in our life, love, relationships, and yet once we are born, there is no material umbilical organ. Once we are born, we are cut off and knotted and then we have the navel as the symbol of our invisible cord and connection to the universe. The dictionary definition of umbilical cord: “a cordlike structure joining the fetus to the placenta of the mother; the cable connecting an outside astronaut or aquanaut to his or her ship; a power supply line to a rocket or spacecraft preceding takeoff.” Once we are born, we are seemingly devoid of an umbilical organ. I say seemingly because although there is no umbilical organ per se, the Umbilicus energy is all powerful and is, to my mind’s eye, an invisible feeding tube which is connected to the universe and then is connected throughout the body. My visual image is similar to the one in the movie the MATRIX, when the characters, Trinity, Morpheus and Neal, are hooked up to machines with long tubes, which look like material umbilical cords. I see invisible umbilical cords everywhere, connecting the microcosm to the macrocosm. How else would we humans have created this cordlike structure for material purposes – unless on some deep level, we understood its power and its invisible presence in our daily lives?

It was through teaching 5-day Jin Shin Jyutsu classes that I began to play with these archetypal concepts of the Umbilical and Diaphragm Flows. For what else is a 5-day Jin Shin Jyutsu class but the 5 depths inside the 6th Depth circle – the framework of the class? We have already established that every Jin Shin Jyutsu class is a 6th Depth circle. The Diaphragm Flow, the father of all flows, is the bellows which fans the fire and vitality of our lives. The Diaphragm, extrovert energy makes the journey to the Jin Shin Jyutsu class, and part of its expression is to bring all the information of the heaven or invisible world down to earth. The Umbilicus energy takes over, the mother of all flows, she is the invisible nurturer, brings warmth into relationships and is able to make connections between all aspects of our being, is able to see relationships. The Umbilicus, the introvert energy turns within to nurture the class, to direct the distribution of nutrients and knowledge to every person within the 6th Depth class circle.

If learning is truly the study of relationships, then Umbilicus energy is essential to every class, for Umbilicus is responsible for warmth and harmony in all relationships. The Diaphragm and Umbilicus Flows come into being to bring all together. To distill the energy of Diaphragm and Umbilicus down to its essence, one might say Diaphragm is the driving power in life and Umbilicus is the connection, the love of life. (If there is not enough power in one’s life, there is a deep Diaphragm need, and if there is not enough love, there is a deep Umbilicus deficiency.)

Another Irony in these 6th Depth organ flows is that the Diaphragm Function Energy is an ascending flow. It originates in the diaphragm and it circulates the lungs, travels up the front of the arm to the middle and ring finger to join with the Umbilicus energy; but its job is to help all heaven to descend, or to help descending energy. In turn, the Umbilicus Function Energy is a descending flow. It starts from the ring fingernail, flows down the back of the arm, into the 3rd front rib, where it separates and continues its journey, one part through the ribs, the heart, to the 14 area, the stomach, the pancreas, the gall bladder – and the other part weaves its way through the head, to join up with the Gall Bladder energy, just below the eyelid; its job is to help energy ascend.

Thus we have a unique reversal of form and function in the 6th Depth circle of unity. In this circle of unity there is no contradiction, no division; characteristics are interchangeable and reversible. If we are able to wrap our Western minds around that, we are prepared to understand.

The Diaphragm Function Energy in conjunction with the energy of its astrological sign, Sagittarius, has the ability to perceive; the ability to perceive the heaven world, the whole picture, the 6th Depth circle of unity. The Umbilicus Function Energy, in conjunction with the material of the Capricorn constellation, has the energy and desire to know how to use this perception of the bigger picture, and its desire is to use this perception, down here on earth.

The fundamental question of a Jin Shin Jyutsu class is related to the Umbilicus energy, How do we use this information down here on planet earth? How do we use what we have perceived in a 5-day Jin Shin Jyutsu class?

The mystery of LIFE, the invisible, unmanifested energy of Text 1, is revealed and manifested through the organ flows of 6th Depth, the Diaphragm and Umbilicus Function Energy. It is through understanding their function, their power and their duties that we can begin to understand an important component of our being. They make it all happen, they bring it down to earth and they send it back up to heaven. They are the nonmaterial, material flows, they are the transitional flows, the middle flows of Text 2, that bring the unmanifested energy of Text 1 into being. What I love most about the Diaphragm and Umbilicus Flows, and the reason I volunteered to write about these two organ flows is because if we understand them, we are better equipped to understand Jin Shin Jyutsu Physio-Philosophy.

In order to discuss the organ flows in 6th Depth, the Diaphragm and Umbilicus Function Energy, I would like to backtrack a bit and look at 6th Depth as a whole and then delve into the two organ flows. What about 6th Depth? We are all living within a myriad of 6th Depth circles. There are 6th Depth circles everywhere, and a 6th Depth circle is the circle of unity. A family unit is a 6th Depth circle, a body, a cell, a community, a school, a church, a country, our planet earth, a Jin Shin Jyutsu class, are all fluid 6th Depth circles.

On the unmanifested, Text 1 level, the Main Central Vertical Universal Harmonizing Energy divides the 6th Depth circle in half, vertically. On the manifested, Text 2 level, the Diaphragm and Umbilicus Function Energy divides that circle in half horizontally. So within 6th Depth, the circle, unity, the four directions and the cross, are formed, dividing the body in two, vertically and horizontally. And yet ironically that divide is not a separation, it is through the Main Central Vertical Universal Harmonizing Energy and through the power of the diaphragm and the connection of the Umbilicus that we are truly unified. The paradox inherent in both life and 6th Depth is that through our division we are unified!!!

In Text 1, the Main Central Vertical Universal Harmonizing Energy is revealed as the central flow in the body, and through its oneness, it reveals the two-ness of the Major Vertical Supervisor Universal Harmonizing Energy, which helps create and recreate, both left and right sides of the body, male and female energy, all on the vertical plane. The left and right Major Vertical Supervisor Energy are archetypes for masculine and feminine energy in Text 1 (the invisible level). (Note: their names include two important words, vertical and universal.)

In Text 2, the Diaphragm and Umbilicus Function Energy are middle flows on the horizontal plane and they now become individualized functions, they separate and simultaneously actively connect our 13s (heaven) with our 15s (earth). In Text 2 (the visible level) the Diaphragm is the archetype for the FATHER figure and the Umbilicus is the archetype for the MOTHER figure. Our archetypes are densing down, from male and female energy, to father and mother energy to the unique expression of those archetypes in the individual human being. From the dictionary, the definition of archetype is: “the model from which later examples are developed, or which they conform, prototype, the assumed example or perfect model which inferior examples may resemble but never equal. Archetypes can be observed only through their effects, e.g., images recurring in dreams, behavior patterns, etc.”

The Kojiki and the Book of Genesis, in the Bible, are filled with matriarchal and patriarchal archetypes; through these archetypes the roots and the densing down of our male and female energy are revealed – the GENEALOGY of the human race.

Star Born and Earth Bound

Our entire life resides within one breath. All we really have is this moment. How can one live fully? Looking more closely at our 2nd Depth with our “ah ha” awareness and understanding, we can facilitate all of this with our jumper cables. Within the beauty of creation, we are given Spirit, Mind and Body.

Scientists have discovered we are made up of the same stuff found in exploding stars. We really are part of the cosmos, born from the stars and planets. We see this in the cervical star, the 5-pointed star; and on the elemental level, there is the lumbar circle. The planets and the relationship of the elements in the zodiac are the constant rhythms of our life…the macrocosm and the microcosm.

Again, we see the relationship of the macrocosm and the microcosm when we look at the 6th Depth (“big B”) Breath and the 2nd Depth (“little b”) breath. We begin this life with a breath. The lungs are our foundation of life, receiving the heavenly breath, which goes throughout the body – invisible, yet is our very essence. Carrying oxygen to the blood, transforming nutrients into energy, the lungs are organs of regeneration; and through this process our large intestine takes what we don’t use and unloads what Mary describes as our “dust, dirt and greasy grime”. So, with the invisible breath from the lungs to the material process of the large intestine, we see the dance of heaven and earth weaving and spiraling throughout us.

Second Depth also contains the numbers, which govern the depths. 5 is the number of 1st and 6th Depth, 6 is 4th Depth, 7 is 5th Depth, 8 is 3rd Depth; and 9 is the number for 2nd Depth. 9 speaks of letting go of the old in order to make space for the new; 9 speaks of cycles, fulfillment and transformation. All of the numbers in 2nd Depth add up to 11, which is the numeric symbol for 7th Depth, which brings us back to the light always available to us.

I’ve often thought about Mary’s statement, “Sadness is born of possessiveness.” What does that really mean? Of course, sadness is a natural reaction to loss, but looking through another lens, we experience ourselves as material matter instead of spirit, and we experience each other as matter. When we recognize we are spirit, there is no loss, no sadness; and we are human, but I think I’m beginning to see where Mary was taking us.

A glimmer here and there, we can reach for the stars and contemplate the wonder. Thank you, Mary.

The Depth and the Spiralling Circle

1st Depth

In the First Depth the energy has densed down so much to form a physical body, a sacred temple for the soul to live. It is related to the Energy Body for the physical body. Saturn is the planet here to give us boundaries. He is the one who protects us and opens up to us the gate to freedom only when we really own this body and sustain and nourish it. In the First Depth we are born into a body to go through life and find our way to the real home of our soul. Only on earth do we have the chance to make the experiences we need to evolve and ascend. The physical organs related to the First Depth are the Spleen and Stomach.

After the energy has built all subtle Energetic Bodies it enters the physical body and forms the different body layers in each Depth. Man starts out his life from the time of birth and begins his individual path of life.

Coming from Unity, we begin to experience life. The baby is still fully wrapped into the sacred space, where s/he comes from, then grows up and feels separated from this divine security. S/He gets older, becomes more and more independent and finally leaves the parent’s home to find her/his own path.

We totally grow into the diversity and manyfold of life to unfold our abilities and to experience and enjoy our humanness with all our senses. Life asks us to unfold our innate potential and bring it into the world. Doing this, we grow and learn. And when have reached the peak of our energy and productivity, our soul is longing for more stillness and peace. This makes us reduce our actions and slow down a bit. The psychic and spiritual powers want to develop and be integrated into our doing/being. The journey becomes more inward oriented; we are searching for the meaning in life. When we have reached our heart and have fulfilled our spiritual journey, we will connect again with the eternal power from which we have come.
