Ian Harris reminds us of The Importance of the 5-Day Basic Seminar in The Main Central Jin Shin Jyutsu Newsletter, issue Number 56, Spring 2007:
*******************
For many years Mary Burmeister presented a 5-day crash course in Jin Shin Jyutsu. During these five days we learned philosophy and technique. We were also made aware of the usefulness of Self-Help, upon which Jin Shin Jyutsu is based (KNOW (Help) MYSELF).
This 5-day Basic Seminar is still being presented by authorized instructors in much the same way as Mary previously had. Although this course contains the basic overview of all the material given to us by Mary, it is evident that it is difficult to assimilate all the aspects and details in such a short period. Over time, other more specific courses have evolved based on this same material. This certainly gives us an opportunity to deepen our awareness in whichever aspect we are drawn.
As Jin Shin Jyutsu is based on KNOW MYSELF, that brings an understanding of all the parts and their relationships that are contained in Myself. This we can always experience first hand through our individual Self-Help practice or through attendance of Self-Help classes, which require no attendance of a 5-day Basic Seminar.
The other classes offered have varying prerequisites of the 5-Day Basic Seminar attendance. These are not advanced classes, rather an opportunity to spend more time with different parts of Jin Shin Jyutsu and Myself. Jin Shin Jyutsu is a lifelong study as KNOWing MYSELF is life long. It is based on the whole even when we immerse ourselves in the study of the parts. It is also important to see the relationship of the parts to the whole. We can see this more clearly when we then return to the source of the parts, in this case, the 5-Day Basic Seminar.
