I’m thinking about labels…

NO JUDGMENT

Everything in life holds both a blessing and a curse. We deny this when we label the events of our lives as either good or bad. The following old Zen story illustrates this lesson most effectively.

A farmer had a horse but one day, the horse ran away and so the farmer and his son had to plow their fields themselves. Their neighbors said, “Oh, what bad luck that your horse ran away!” But the farmer replied, “Bad luck, good luck, who knows?”

The next week, the horse returned to the farm, bringing a herd of wild horses with him. “What wonderful luck!” cried the neighbors, but the farmer responded, “Good luck, bad luck, who knows?”

Then, the farmer’s son was thrown as he tried to ride one of the wild horses, and he broke his leg. “Ah, such bad luck,” sympathized the neighbors. Once again, the farmer responded, “Bad luck, good luck, who knows?”

A short time later, the ruler of the country recruited all young men to join his army for battle. The son, with his broken leg, was left at home. “What good luck that your son was not forced into battle!” celebrated the neighbors. And the farmer remarked, “Good luck, bad luck, who knows?”

“Do not judge, and you will never be mistaken.”

I’m thinking about problems…

LIFE COMES WITH PROBLEMS

“For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin — real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be got through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life.”
— Fr. Alfred D’Souza

Life always brings problems. We really can’t live without them.

And so it helps to shift our perspective. We can stop trying to avoid the problems. We can stop feeling victimized by what’s happening. Instead, we can consciously work with the challenge of the moment to learn more about ourselves and the world. When we make this shift in attitude, we discover ourselves to be strong and powerful.

“Every lesson is a widening and deepening of consciousness. It is a stretching of the mind beyond its conceptual limits and a stretching of the heart beyond its emotional boundaries. It is a bringing of unconscious material into consciousness, a healing of past wounds, and a discovery of new faith and trust.”
— Paul Ferrini

Janet Oliver on Safety Energy Lock “4”

This is article #5 of a series of articles by our IT IS Seminar faculty on the Safety Energy Locks from a Self-help perspective. The series begins in Issue Number 36, Spring 2002, of The Main Central Jin Shin Jyutsu Newsletter.

Janet Oliver continues the series with her article in The Main Central Jin Shin Jyutsu Newsletter, issue Number 40, Spring 2003:

Safety Energy Lock “4”

In August 1988, while teaching a class at the Acupressure Institute in Berkeley, California, I experienced a strong force that pushed me into the middle of the room, while every cell of my being was filled with the words, “Call home.” When I checked my phone messages, I found, sure enough, a message from my parents’ neighbor in Modesto, California, informing me that my father had a massive stroke minutes before and that my Mother was in a deep state of shock.

I drove the ninety miles to Modesto and found my Mother at the hospital sitting alone by my Father’s bedside. He was in a coma. The doctors said he had suffered a massive stroke, and there was no hope he would recover. Their consensus was that the brain damage had been extensive, and even if he did awaken, he would never have use of his left arm or either leg.

My Mother held my Father’s right hand as we sat by his bedside and quietly talked. It finally became obvious to us that when my Mother spoke he would squeeze her hand. Though in a coma, he could both hear her voice and squeeze her hand. It was my first awareness that there are “awake” comas and “asleep” comas. Realizing that he could hear, I explained his situation to him, telling him exactly what the doctors had said. I also told him I did not necessarily believe there was no hope, and I would be happy to work with him if he awoke, on the process of getting better. I also explained that the choice was his, of course.

In Jin Shin Jyutsu Physio-Philosophy there is a flow (a series of Safety Energy Locks held in a particular order) that one does for a coma. When I began doing this coma #4 flow, my Father’s pulses were very quiet and feeble. As I slowly progressed through the Safety Energy Locks, his pulses became stronger and his “presence” seemed more in his body. I felt he was about to wake up. In reaching down to the big toe, #7 on the flow pattern, his leg, which the doctors said would never move again, came up and kicked my hand away. The third time had the same results. When I tried a fourth time, the left arm, which was never to move again, came over and pushed me away! I finally “heard” him.

I picked up his right hand, the one he used to squeeze my Mother’s hand, and spoke to him. “Dad, I am going to ask you some questions. If the answer is yes, squeeze my hand. Dad, do you want to die?” I felt a big squeeze. “Dad, do you want to live?” There was no squeeze. “You are happy where you are?” There was a huge squeeze. “You are ecstatic where you are?” …A huge squeeze. “You want to go?” …A big squeeze. “Do you want to come back?” There was no squeeze.

Here was the tremendous message spoken from this place where he was. He was in a coma, and no words passed between us, yet he was able to give us this powerful and beautiful message. Without words he was able to communicate his joy. It made me so comfortable with his passing.

The next time I saw Mary Burmeister in Arizona, I told her this story of my Father’s passing. She said that, yes, indeed, a coma is such a beautiful place, as my Father had experienced, that it is difficult to want to return. She said during class that if it is desired for a person to wake up from a coma, someone should stay with that person 24 hours a day, so that there is literally someone to come back to.

Thank you, Janet

Thank you, Mary.

Thank you, David.

I’m thinking about owning my life…

DO YOU OWN YOUR LIFE?

“The meaning of life is to give life meaning.”
— Ken Hudgins

When we own our lives, we accept what we’ve inherited and the experiences we hold in our memories. We also claim our right to create new conditions if we’re not happy with what’s come before. We assume responsibility for changing what does not suit us. We acknowledge our own special talents and skills, and truly comprehend our right to enjoy the journey. In short, we embrace the meaning and purpose, the mystery and the beauty of our lives.

Do you feel that you own your life at the moment?

“I think of life itself now as a wonderful play that I’ve written for myself… and so my purpose is to have the utmost fun playing my part.”
— Shirley MacLaine

— Benjamin Disraeli

Birgitta Meinhardt on Safety Energy Lock “3”

This is article #4 of a series of articles by our IT IS Seminar faculty on the Safety Energy Locks from a Self-help perspective. The series begins in Issue Number 36, Spring 2002, of The Main Central Jin Shin Jyutsu Newsletter.

Birgitta Meinhardt continues the series with her article in The Main Central Jin Shin Jyutsu Newsletter, issue Number 39, Winter 2003:

Safety Energy Lock “3”

Safety Energy Lock 3 is the door of life, the birthplace of the Mediator. 3 is the dance, the waltz, the movement, the activity. The rhythm of life is the 3/4 bar. 3 is our breathing specialist. As long as we breathe, we are able to move, we can walk on. This is defense against problems and discomforts. Not letting go makes us heavy, immovable and stiff. Then the attitudes appear. While dancing the waltz, we always see the things around us from a different perspective, always new. 3 dissolves and releases conflicts, and a new unity is formed – a structured unity, which becomes the fountain of life, 3rd Depth. 3 creates harmony, so development in general is possible.

During labor the lungs of the baby are squeezed together. 1 – exhale – as the baby is born, it has to inhale against a resistance; consciousness is created. 2 – to be able to truly live there has to be an exhale out of our free will in the right moment. 3 – in the confidence that allows us to be led, that lets things happen, that waits for the right moment, we are helped to receive a deep understanding of relationships. Intuitive certainty is to “UNLOAD” and “RECEIVE”. As we exhale all skepticisms and inhale our abundance, we help the lung and pelvic girdle, the place of all life.

In Self-Help Book II, Mary gives us the simple routine of holding the shoulder (3) and same side groin (15) to harmonize Safety Energy Lock 3. This same option is given for Safety Energy Locks 5, 6, 15 and 23. Each of these Safety Energy Locks appears on the circulation pathway of the Mediator. 5 speaks about putting off the old and putting on the new, 6 speaks about being in balance, 15 speaks about the joy and laughter in our life, and, or course, 23 speaks about responsibility.

The 3, the new one – beyond duality, is the birthplace of the Mediator, connecting left and right sides, front and back. In Self-Help Book I, Mary writes about the Mediator on page 18. “This is the ‘mediator’. Therefore, this energy is the cause for disharmony in the body. It is of vital importance to keep this energy functioning properly for the total supply of energy to the whole man.”

Thank you, Birgitta.

Thank you, Mary.

I’m thinking about Verse 81 of the Tao…

Words born of the mind are not true

True words are not born of the mind

Those who have virtue do not look for faults

Those who look for faults have no virtue

Those who come to know It

do not rely on learning

Those who rely on learning

do not come to know It

The Sage sees the world

as an expansion of his own self

So what need has he to accumulate things?

By giving to others

he gains more and more

By serving others

he receives everything

Heaven gives,

and all things turn out for the best

The Sage lives,

and all things go as Tao goes

all things move as the wind blows

Iole M. Lebensztajn on Safety Energy Lock 2

This is article #3 of a series of articles by our IT IS Seminar faculty on the Safety Energy Locks from a Self-help perspective. The series begins in Issue Number 36, Spring 2002, of The Main Central Jin Shin Jyutsu Newsletter.

Iole M. Lebensztajn continues the series with her article in The Main Central Jin Shin Jyutsu Newsletter, issue Number 38, Fall 2002:

Safety Energy Lock “2” ~ Life Force for All Creatures (Wisdom)

Holding our Safety Energy Lock 2 we are in touch with our Life Force and our Wisdom for living with the different aspects of Duality in Balance and Harmony.

It is interesting to notice that Mary talks about Safety Energy Lock 2 on page 14 of Self-Help Book 2. Safety Energy Lock 14 helps us with the experience of living between Heaven and Earth (bustline and hipline), bringing the capacity of being nourished and sustained by both realities. The physical and spiritual aspects of our being are the main duality of our lives. When we learn how to live both of them in oneness, we can feel the Life Force expressing itself in our being.

Living through duality, we develop wisdom, the capacity of perceiving, accepting and balancing differences. Moreover, with wisdom we learn how to recognize relationships instead of opposition. Maybe this is why we jumper cable Safety Energy Locks 2 and 3 (3 helps relationships) as a quickie to recharge 2. Inside the principle of 2 there is 3 (Balance and Harmony).

As page 15 is also about how to apply self-help for Safety Energy Lock 2, it reminds me that this living in duality is supposed to be FUN and not to be taken so seriously.

Therefore, allow yourself to just quietly hold your 2 at the back of your hip and feel how this affects your breathing your legs, your back, your Being. And remember to BE the SMILE.

Thank you, Iole.

Thank you, Mary.

Thank you, David.
