Sara Harper on Safety Energy Lock “10”

This is article #11 of a series of articles by our IT IS Seminar faculty on the Safety Energy Locks from a Self-help perspective. The series begins in Issue Number 36, Spring 2002, of The Main Central Jin Shin Jyutsu Newsletter.

Sara Harper continues the series with her article in The Main Central Jin Shin Jyutsu Newsletter, issue Number 46, Fall 2004:

“Safety Energy Lock…’10’ came into the universe meaning air, vehicle of the outpouring of limitless Life-Power.” ~ Mary Burmeister

I recently looked up the word “air” in the dictionary. Air is described as the gaseous envelope of the earth, our atmosphere, the out of doors. Air is essentially related to the creative breath of life, speech, the stormy winds and the emergence of the life process itself. To walk on air is to feel good, playful, to enjoy or BE happy. The verb “air”, means to open to, freshen or air something out. All one need do is to Exhale, let go, air out and then “walk on air” to BE happy. If one is “up in the air”, attitudes of uncertainty, anger, and annoyance begin to show themselves, causing one to hold one’s breath.

Ten is the outpouring of limitless Life-Power. One is the prime mover, divine unity. The power of the Creator, 0 (zero) is the Source, the boundless nature of the Infinite. The word “power” represents Energy, and brings to the mind the image of authority and leadership (Safety Energy Lock 19). The number 10 represents God and Humanity. Ten is the Mother of Soul.¹ Number one is born from spirit, while ten is born from matter. Thus there is Heaven and Earth. One is the symbol of being and is our spiritual essence. Ten symbolizes the return to unity, the totality of the universe. Life, as described in the dictionary, is the act of living or simply Being. Our Being is an instant flash of light in the midst of eternal night. A human being is the most beautiful, perfect essence imaginable, whether in reality or simply as an idea. So Exhale, and unload all attitudes, and BE.

To release Safety Energy Lock 10 in the Self-Help books, we can hold both “upper arms (between elbow and shoulder)” or ‘”left hand on right upper arm and right hand on left thigh (medial or inner side).” This would be high 19 and opposite high 1. Utilizing 19 and 1 moves us into perfect balance. Or we can hold the Index finger. The Index finger represents FLOW, perfect circulation, the Fourth Depth. There is harmony with no limitations, no obstacles, “no-things”.

Mary would often work on my 10s, and when she would first get a hold of them, it felt as though I could not even exhale. then as they began to melt, I felt myself letting go and the breath would begin to come in again with ease. She repeated in class many times about using the 10 flow, the 1 flow and the 4th Depth flows together to harmonize the entire body for “the rest of your jumper cable days”. And we have it so simply expressed in the Self-Help books.

Simply Be the Breath I am and BE.

I’m thinking about acceptance…

THE POWER OF ACCEPTANCE

“It is permissible to take life’s blessings with both hands provided thou dost know thyself prepared in the opposite event to take them just as gladly. This applies to food and friends and kindred, to anything God gives and takes away… As long as God is satisfied do thou rest content. If he is pleased to want something else of thee, still rest content.”
— Meister Eckhart

Our life begins to change in magical ways when we open to the experience of life AS IT IS. With acceptance, we stop fighting what is happening. And this creates space, an opening for new relationships to unfold.

Explore unconditionally saying yes to the facts of life. Accept your past and where you are now. Unconditional acceptance is unconditional love and this is healing.

“Sometimes what seems like surrender isn’t surrender at all. It’s about what’s going on in our hearts. About seeing clearly the way life is and accepting it and being true to it, whatever the pain, because the pain of not being true to it is far, far greater.”
— Nicholas Evans

Janet Oliver on Safety Energy Lock “9”

This is article #10 of a series of articles by our IT IS Seminar faculty on the Safety Energy Locks from a Self-help perspective. The series begins in Issue Number 36, Spring 2002, of The Main Central Jin Shin Jyutsu Newsletter.

Janet Oliver continues the series with her article in The Main Central Jin Shin Jyutsu Newsletter, issue Number 45, Summer 2004:

The Power of 9

Yesterday, a client coming for a week of sessions arrived the first day looking quite askew, as if she had a hard time making her appointment time. In fact, she said that she had a horrible time. She was in tremendous conflict with her parents, something that she had experienced from time to time through her life. I noticed that both her 9’s held a lot of tension, and I focused on clearing the 9’s. After the session, she said, “I feel so good, so completely different. I’m going to lunch with my mom now, and it feels like I’ll enjoy it.” Sure enough, she returned for her second appointment that day, saying, “It was the best lunch I’ve had with Mom for a really long time!”

Today, she returned for her first appointment of the day. Last night, her mate was very upset. Usually, this kind of situation is upsetting to my client. However, after her two sessions (both focused on clearing the 9’s), she experienced her sweetheart’s upset by staying in the present moment, listening well, and being supportive.

In addition, she though of her conflict of yesterday with her parents, and said, “Was that only yesterday? It seems so long ago.” Her frustration and anger…gone!

This power of the 9’s reminded me of my first class with Mary Burmeister in the early 1980’s. I traveled to the class with tremendous pain in my mid-back (9 area) from a severe car accident. When Mary entered the room, I felt my shoulders drop and my mid-back starting to relax somewhat. As each day went by, I felt better and better, as my back pain was slowly being relieved. On the fourth day of the class, Mary applied her famous “lightning” jumper cables to my right middle finger, which ended my tension everywhere, including my 9’s. Positively amazing!

Furthermore, throughout the class, I was staying with friends of mine, who were having great difficulty with their marriage. When I came to their home at the end of each day, I entered a home of discord, with both of my friends upset with one another. Normally, I would find myself feeling devastated and overwrought in such a situation. Instead, I simply listened to each of them and didn’t feel any particular need to “fix” things. I practiced what I was learning in class on their 9-year old son, and within the application of 3 or 4 Safety Energy Locks, he went from being upset to being like me – in the middle of conflict and discord, yet feeling fine.

So, here I am, 21 years later, assigned to write an article on Safety Energy Lock 9. I contemplated the nature of 9 – the ability to bring us into the BREATH in the present moment. I thought of how 9 ends cycles, bringing completion and the seeds of fresh beginnings. As Wayne has stated in issue #12, page 3, middle column, of The Main Central, “NINE frees man from the past and brings Joy of Being into the present.” I remembered that “9” is “Clear Intelligence”.

Last summer, as I was contemplating these features of 9, I decided to “experiment” with Safety Energy Lock 9, using self-help. So, each day, I held my 19’s and thumbs, as Mary suggests in Self-Help Book 2. I also utilized the 9 flow pattern in text 1, adapting it as needed, and being willing to twist my arms around my back to reach each of the 9’s. I cleared the whole area, from 9 over to 26, every day.

As the days passed, the impact was immediately apparent. Situations and people came pouring out of my past for resolution and completion, one after the other. It wasn’t a happy time; it was certainly uncomfortable. After a few weeks, I prayed for relief, and continued to self-help Safety Energy Lock 9. [Editor’s note: In this sentence “self-help” is a verb!] Relief came, but only in the daytime. My dreams turned to nightmare situations out of the past. However, the dreams ended by bringing resolution, light and understanding to each situation.

Finally, one night I dreamed that I was suddenly shot in one 9/26 area, then the other in rapid succession, by a gunman appearing out of nowhere. I awakened in excruciating pain, as if the dream were true! After a couple days, the pain subsided, the cycle of nightmarish dreams came to an end, and my “experiment” was clearly complete.

It is said the 9’s put a period on the past, and now I have my own testimony to say it’s true.

Thank you, Janet.

Thank you, Mary.

Thank you, David.

Mona Harris on Safety Energy Lock “8”

This is article #9 of a series of articles by our IT IS Seminar faculty on the Safety Energy Locks from a Self-help perspective. The series begins in Issue Number 36, Spring 2002, of The Main Central Jin Shin Jyutsu Newsletter.

Mona Harris continues the series with her article in The Main Central Jin Shin Jyutsu Newsletter, issue Number 44, Spring 2004:

“Safety” Energy Lock 8

In preparing to begin teaching the Living The Art class, my focus has been on Mary’s three Self-Help Books. Therefore, I approach Safety Energy Lock 8 from this point of view. The first time we meet Safety Energy Lock 8 is in Self-Help Book I, page 44 (4+4=8!) as part of the ANTERIOR DESCENDING energy (stomach flow). Our next encounter with 8 is part of the POSTERIOR DESCENDING energy (bladder flow). Finally we see 8 again as special sequence #6 (page 54) for revitalizing muscular tensions. In all three instances we are given variations of the 8: low 8 for the stomach flow, center back of the knee for the bladder flow and just below the bend of the knee (top of calves) for muscle tension. These are three different ways we get to use the magic that is the number 8.

In the stomach flow the 8 helps the energy to descend down the back. Mary devotes much of Self-Help Book I to the harmonizing of the depths and the respective attitudes by holding the fingers. The attitudes manifesting in each of the depths are caused by a mediator in disharmony. The three times we see Safety Energy Lock 8 in Self-Help Book I can remind us of the 8 as the number representing the positive qualities of the third depth, and, therefore, has a relationship to the diagonal mediator to harmonize all our depths.

We are also given methods to harmonize our Main Central Vertical, Major Supervisor and Diagonal Mediator in Self-Help Book I.

On the Safety Energy Lock level, the Main Central is represented by 0 (zero), whose color is pale yellow. Safety Energy Lock 1, whose color is deep yellow, is the “birthplace” of the Supervisor. Safety Energy Lock 8, whose color is yellow, again is the number of the third depth which has a relationship to the Mediator. As the Mediator is harmonizing left and right (Supervisor) with the Main Central, so is yellow the “mediator” between pale yellow and dark yellow.

The first and only time Mary refers to Safety Energy Lock 8 by name is in Self-Help Book II on page 26, total and complete! Here she says, “8 came into the universe meaning rhythm, strength and peace.” If I live my life in my own rhythm, then I am able to develop my own strength and live in peace.

In Self-Help Book III Mary shows us the FLOW PATTERN for the body jumper cable, which is represented by two figure 8’s (flowing in opposite directions) – the 8 is the symbol of the JUMPER CABLE. Finally, on page 8 she reminds us what Jin Shin Jyutsu is about, Now Know Myself, when she says: “The awakening of the awareness and understanding of the dynamic functions of the HANDS and FEET, jumper cables, is fascinating, exciting, FUN.”

Thank you, Mona.

Thank you, Mary.

Thank you, David.

Margareth Umeoka Serra on Safety Energy Lock “7”

This is article #8 of a series of articles by our IT IS Seminar faculty on the Safety Energy Locks from a Self-help perspective. The series begins in Issue Number 36, Spring 2002, of The Main Central Jin Shin Jyutsu Newsletter.

Margareth Umeoka Serra continues the series with her article in The Main Central Jin Shin Jyutsu Newsletter, issue Number 43, Winter 2004:

Safety Energy Lock 7 ~ “VICTORY, VICTORY, VICTORY!”

During the Faculty Meeting when we were asked who would write about Safety Energy Lock 7, Iole raised my hand and I accepted the challenge. I do not speak or write English fluently, however I decided to face the challenge because the first thing that came to my mind then was: 7 is Victory! As I look back into my life after having met Jin Shin Jyutsu, I realize how many Victories I have achieved.

To begin with, to participate in the Faculty Meeting as a Living the Art Instructor is a great Victory!

To realize that reality is as simple as the Breath, expanding and contracting, letting go of the old to abundantly receive the new is also Victory!

It is Victory to know that there are no preferences in life…there are only experiences!

To experience Being no-worry, Being no-fear, Being no-anger, Being no-sadness, Being no-trying-to’s is Victory!

To be able to express the human Being that we are is Victory!

To accept who I AM is Victory!

To remember our dreams and manifest them is Victory!

To understand who I AM is Victory!

To act in alignment with my Awareness and Understanding of who I AM is Victory!

To realize that I AM the perfect life power is also Victory!

To exhale from Safety Energy Locks 4 to 7 is Victory!

I feel victorious for I have been experiencing the qualities of Safety Energy Lock 7 in every breath and in my life. Number 7 is the number of positive qualities of Fifth Depth where man becomes Enlightened…Perfect!

The self-help for Safety Energy Lock 7 is a combination of Safety Energy Lock 2 and opposite 15, which reminds me that we can harmonize any belief in lack or limitation in our lives with Laughter and Wisdom.

When Safety Energy Lock 7 directly sends energy into the 4’s, we become aware that we are already Perfect, Enlightened, and Victorious! As I hold my ring finger as a quickie to harmonize Safety Energy Lock 7, I feel that I do not have to do anything in order to be accepted and loved. I simply allow myself to express WHO I AM. That is a great Victory, isn’t it?
With much love, I wish you all Abundant Light and many Victories!

Thank you, Margareth.

Thank you, Mary.

Thank you, David.

Iole M. Lebensztajn on Safety Energy Lock “6”

This is article #7 of a series of articles by our IT IS Seminar faculty on the Safety Energy Locks from a Self-help perspective. The series begins in Issue Number 36, Spring 2002, of The Main Central Jin Shin Jyutsu Newsletter.

Iole M. Lebensztajn continues the series with her article in The Main Central Jin Shin Jyutsu Newsletter, issue Number 42, Fall 2003:

Safety Energy Lock 6: Balance, Discrimination

Balance has to do with equilibrium, stability and parity or equality of forces. Discrimination is related to the ability to distinguish, to clearly see the differences with keen perception. How interesting! Safety Energy Lock 6, at the sole of the foot, helps us to recognize differences, oppositions, and contrasts. At the same time it allows us to have no preferences, being able to freely and literally walk between polarities, experiencing them without being stuck in one of them. Moreover, it supports our ability to find a balanced expression of opposite aspects of our lives, giving them equal weight and importance. Its physiology can be observed through the balanced movement of opposition that our feet make as we walk (right, left, right…).

Once I told a client, who had dizziness and a tender bump at the sole of her foot, to hold her 6 and little toe at least twice a day. In one week she completely recovered her balance and the bump was much smaller.

Safety Energy Lock 6 is presented by Mary on pages 22 and 23 of Self-Help Book 2. Let’s look at these numbers. Item b. of page 22 says, “release tension/stress in the shoulders, clavicle (collar bone) areas,” exactly where Safety Energy Lock 22 lives. So, 6 helps discomfort at the 22 areas. Besides that, Safety Energy Lock 22 brings us the capacity of adapting and integrating with that which is new and different for us.

Safety Energy Lock 23 is the only Safety Energy Lock that lives in 4th Depth. When 4th Depth is in harmony, it shows all qualities that number 6 expresses, including balance, discrimination, clear and sharp perception. When 4th Depth is not in harmony, we see FEAR (False Evidence Appearing Real), i.e., a misperception of reality.

Talking about Fear, it is fascinating to realize how many times Mary talks about FEAR in contrast with FUN through all her books, sometimes in an explicit way, sometimes not so much. On page 22, she is discussing number 6, which, as we have commented above, symbolizes the harmony of 4th Depth, which is the depth primarily affected by fear. At the top of this page she wrote, “FUN – Fulfillment, Understanding, No-thing. BE the SMILE.”

The root of the word fulfill has to do with complete, entire, whole, that which has all that is necessary. “Fear causes belief in lack and limitation” – (Textbook 2, page 25), whereas FUN brings us fulfillment, the awareness of being complete, of having all that is necessary to be happy within myself.

To understand is to perceive and comprehend the nature and the significance of…to know. Again, fear happens when we do not fully comprehend, or we misperceive our reality. In general, fear is related to the unknown, and FUN creates the environment for us to NOW KNOW MYSELF.

Inside the no-thing we find the no thoughts the, no attitudes. It is the “place” where our mind can finally be still, rest and become aware of our true self. From the FEAR viewpoint, no-thing is lack of things, lack of existence, is lack of self. However, when we are FUN, we realize that we are not a thing. We become conscious that we have, we use, and we play with things as tools to experience who we are choosing to BE NOW.

Item c. tells us that Safety Energy Lock 6 aids chest congestion. It is the Breathing Governor, and it has a deep connection with Safety Energy Lock 3. Safety Energy Lock 6 also aids digestive discomfort; back and hip tension/stress – all related to its connection with Safety Energy Lock 15. Safety Energy Locks 3, 6 and 15 have a dynamic relationship that can be felt in our body – observing, for instance, how any disharmony in our feet affects our hips and shoulders.

Finally, to bring all these qualities of Safety Energy Lock 6 to our lives we can simply jumper cable 6 or it can be more comfortable to hold 15 and/or the middle finger and/or 3 and 15.

Thank you, Iole.

Thank you, Mary.

Thank you, David.

Sara Harper on Safety Energy Lock “5”

This is article #6 of a series of articles by our IT IS Seminar faculty on the Safety Energy Locks from a Self-help perspective. The series begins in Issue Number 36, Spring 2002, of The Main Central Jin Shin Jyutsu Newsletter.

Sara Harper continues the series with her article in The Main Central Jin Shin Jyutsu Newsletter, issue Number 41, Summer 2003:

Five, “Putting Off the Old and Putting on the New”

When I was twenty-five I went to lunch with a friend for my birthday. He asked me what would I be doing in five years and I smiled and replied, “I will be thirty!!!” At the time that seemed really old. I was recently told that I need to write about the number five, and I kept thinking about five and what it means to me right now.

For me embracing the “Living the Art” and getting to know myself and reflecting the number five, I find I have many things that call to me.

Firstly, my son just turned six so I have been immersed in five year olds. They are so illuminated. Five is a magical age. It seems to be one of curiosity, imagination and playfulness and freedom…an age of knowing and exploring.

Five in the medicine cards is the bear, which represents introspection, looking deep within, knowing oneself. Bear seeks honey, or the sweetness of truth.

Five also represents man and the “STAR that I are,” as Mary says. I am the STAR…the flow of Life.

In a recent “Living the Art” seminar a woman wrote: “Psychologist is its name for folks who think they need to blame. Attitudes all come from fear. They’ll be released if you hold 5, dear. Put off the old and feel more bold. Put on the new and regenerate, too. Open five and feel alive. Erase my fear and let me hear. Clears shoulders and chest to feel my best.”

So here I sit almost 45, and in five years I will be fifty!!! Hopefully, I will be like ten five year olds!!!

Thank you, Sara.

Thank you, Mary.

Thank you, David.

I’m thinking about labels…

NO JUDGMENT

Everything in life holds both a blessing and a curse. We deny this when we label the events of our lives as either good or bad. The following old Zen story illustrates this lesson most effectively.

A farmer had a horse but one day, the horse ran away and so the farmer and his son had to plow their fields themselves. Their neighbors said, “Oh, what bad luck that your horse ran away!” But the farmer replied, “Bad luck, good luck, who knows?”

The next week, the horse returned to the farm, bringing a herd of wild horses with him. “What wonderful luck!” cried the neighbors, but the farmer responded, “Good luck, bad luck, who knows?”

Then, the farmer’s son was thrown as he tried to ride one of the wild horses, and he broke his leg. “Ah, such bad luck,” sympathized the neighbors. Once again, the farmer responded, “Bad luck, good luck, who knows?”

A short time later, the ruler of the country recruited all young men to join his army for battle. The son, with his broken leg, was left at home. “What good luck that your son was not forced into battle!” celebrated the neighbors. And the farmer remarked, “Good luck, bad luck, who knows?”

“Do not judge, and you will never be mistaken.”

I’m thinking about problems…

LIFE COMES WITH PROBLEMS

“For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin — real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be got through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life.”
— Fr. Alfred D’Souza

Life always brings problems. We really can’t live without them.

And so it helps to shift our perspective. We can stop trying to avoid the problems. We can stop feeling victimized by what’s happening. Instead, we can consciously work with the challenge of the moment to learn more about ourselves and the world. When we make this shift in attitude, we discover ourselves to be strong and powerful.

“Every lesson is a widening and deepening of consciousness. It is a stretching of the mind beyond its conceptual limits and a stretching of the heart beyond its emotional boundaries. It is a bringing of unconscious material into consciousness, a healing of past wounds, and a discovery of new faith and trust.”
— Paul Ferrini

Janet Oliver on Safety Energy Lock “4”

This is article #5 of a series of articles by our IT IS Seminar faculty on the Safety Energy Locks from a Self-help perspective. The series begins in Issue Number 36, Spring 2002, of The Main Central Jin Shin Jyutsu Newsletter.

Janet Oliver continues the series with her article in The Main Central Jin Shin Jyutsu Newsletter, issue Number 40, Spring 2003:

Safety Energy Lock “4”

In August 1988, while teaching a class at the Acupressure Institute in Berkeley, California, I experienced a strong force that pushed me into the middle of the room, while every cell of my being was filled with the words, “Call home.” When I checked my phone messages, I found, sure enough, a message from my parents’ neighbor in Modesto, California, informing me that my father had a massive stroke minutes before and that my Mother was in a deep state of shock.

I drove the ninety miles to Modesto and found my Mother at the hospital sitting alone by my Father’s bedside. He was in a coma. The doctors said he had suffered a massive stroke, and there was no hope he would recover. Their consensus was that the brain damage had been extensive, and even if he did awaken, he would never have use of his left arm or either leg.

My Mother held my Father’s right hand as we sat by his bedside and quietly talked. It finally became obvious to us that when my Mother spoke he would squeeze her hand. Though in a coma, he could both hear her voice and squeeze her hand. It was my first awareness that there are “awake” comas and “asleep” comas. Realizing that he could hear, I explained his situation to him, telling him exactly what the doctors had said. I also told him I did not necessarily believe there was no hope, and I would be happy to work with him if he awoke, on the process of getting better. I also explained that the choice was his, of course.

In Jin Shin Jyutsu Physio-Philosophy there is a flow (a series of Safety Energy Locks held in a particular order) that one does for a coma. When I began doing this coma #4 flow, my Father’s pulses were very quiet and feeble. As I slowly progressed through the Safety Energy Locks, his pulses became stronger and his “presence” seemed more in his body. I felt he was about to wake up. In reaching down to the big toe, #7 on the flow pattern, his leg, which the doctors said would never move again, came up and kicked my hand away. The third time had the same results. When I tried a fourth time, the left arm, which was never to move again, came over and pushed me away! I finally “heard” him.

I picked up his right hand, the one he used to squeeze my Mother’s hand, and spoke to him. “Dad, I am going to ask you some questions. If the answer is yes, squeeze my hand. Dad, do you want to die?” I felt a big squeeze. “Dad, do you want to live?” There was no squeeze. “You are happy where you are?” There was a huge squeeze. “You are ecstatic where you are?” …A huge squeeze. “You want to go?” …A big squeeze. “Do you want to come back?” There was no squeeze.

Here was the tremendous message spoken from this place where he was. He was in a coma, and no words passed between us, yet he was able to give us this powerful and beautiful message. Without words he was able to communicate his joy. It made me so comfortable with his passing.

The next time I saw Mary Burmeister in Arizona, I told her this story of my Father’s passing. She said that, yes, indeed, a coma is such a beautiful place, as my Father had experienced, that it is difficult to want to return. She said during class that if it is desired for a person to wake up from a coma, someone should stay with that person 24 hours a day, so that there is literally someone to come back to.

Thank you, Janet

Thank you, Mary.

Thank you, David.
