I’m thinking about the power of the moment…

“How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives.”
— Annie Dillard

We lose the power of the moment because we’re so rarely in it. We’re reliving the past or speculating about the future. We continue to believe that tomorrow’s the day when I’ll be more capable, more wealthy, more fit and more loving. Meanwhile, I’m just putting in time, dreaming of better things but not making any concrete move to realize them.

When you find yourself thinking of the future or the past, bring your awareness into the present moment. Really experience how you feel and what’s happening around you, without judgment. If we can treasure each moment, our lives will be rich, no matter what we have accomplished.

“Lost, yesterday, somewhere between sunrise and sunset, two golden hours, each set with sixty diamond minutes. No reward is offered for they are gone forever.”
— Horace Mann

“If, before going to bed every night, you will tear a page from the calendar, and remark, ‘there goes another day of my life, never to return,’ you will become time conscious.”
— A. B. Zu Tavern

All Combined Energy-Timing, Part 2

Cynthia Broshi shares her understanding of All Combined Energy, Pages 43 and 42, Text 2, in The Main Central Jin Shin Jyutsu Newsletter, issue Number 53, Summer 2006:

“Open your textbook and day-dream.” ~ Mary Burmeister

Desiring further BEING, BREATH/FIRE slows and denses into Mediator, just as thought denses into action. Vibration, emotion and power are born in the activating quality of Mediator. Here also is the cause of most disharmonies, as the function of Mediator is to reflect and blend the perfect Blueprint given by Trinity, just as the waters of our world, when serene, reflect the heavens, just as the rippling flows of tones emanate from within, and reflect Bach’s fugue. In the manifested world it is water (Mediator) in which life originates, and living tissues are composed primarily of water. If the organist had hit a “wrong” note, the vibrations filling the resonant space of the church would have been altered, and when Mediator does not reflect the Wisdom of Trinity the vibrations filling the resonant space of my body alter. This dissonance can be the birth of a “project”.

Over the bridge of Mediator, desiring further BEING, BREATH/FIRE slows and denses, giving birth to 17 “Individualized” Body Function Energy: the EARTH of my Being. Here relationships of the qualities of the Depths condense into action: functions. Within the eternal NOW and Universality of Trinity Energy, Time and Place are born. 12 “Individualized” Body Function Energy (a.k.a. 12 Organ Function Energy), with their five relationship mediators (harmonizers), ascend and descend, “to develop the physical form and the invisible consciousness, voice and energy”. (Page 3, text 2) When their rhythmic dance is in harmony with SOURCE, they reflect all the Wisdom of CAUSE. I and my world are created with protection. (Surface Body Function Energy), with center (Deep Body Function Energy), and as a perfect receptacle, permeated with Energy (Middle Body Function Energy). (Page 4, Text 2)

Amongst many pages of differentiation in our Texts, page 43 is one of blending. These pages of blending are cusps in the development of the Blueprint, and key to my understanding of the Art of Jin Shin Jyutsu. We have developing, developing, blending; developing, developing, blending – like the story of relationship of parent and child. Apparently my parents give birth to me…or do I give birth to them? Relationship (transformation) flows in all directions, just as does FIRE and LIGHT. My relationship with my parents manifests quite differently when I’m newborn, a toddler, teen and adult. When we reflect Blueprint, my parents generate me, and in all my manifestations I regenerate my parents, sparking their transformation. “Individualized” Body Function Energy returns to Main Central, its ancestor, and instigates its further evolution, just as the permutations of Bach’s first chords transform those chords.

All Combined Energy-Timing, Part 1

Cynthia Broshi shares her understanding of All Combined Energy, Pages 43 and 42, Text 2, in The Main Central Jin Shin Jyutsu Newsletter, issue Number 53, Summer 2006:

“Open your textbook and day-dream.” ~ Mary Burmeister

Who is All Combined Energy – Timing? Mary says, “Open your textbook and day-dream.” Last week, gazing semi-blank at page 43, I suddenly realized that All Combined Energy is the name of a particular vibration of energy. Now, I know that I must have “heard” this many times in class – so how fun to finally receive the “ah ha!” – breath by breath, my vision is beginning… As for “Timing” – I’m not certain. Is it a noun, part of the name Page 43 illustrates Energy – Timing? Or is it a verb; is page 43 illustrating the timing of All Combined Energy? At the moment I see it as both.

What is All Combined Energy – Timing? This energy is a harmonious intermingling of all aspects of the Blueprint. As such, I can KNOW it only by listening to the entire sweep of the Blueprint.

Recently I sat in an old stone church in Frankfurt and listened to an organist play a Bach prelude and fugue. The first chords held the totality of the music, which proceeded to unfold carefully, simply, for some measures, giving space in which to appreciate sound and no-sound, tone and over-tone. The music developed: further chords; chords in earnest; tones expanding with fire; fire particulating into vibration – each tone separating into an unending chord of under-tones, over-tones, resonances bounding in all directions past the ranges of perception – just as chords separated into notes; notes cascading as scales into rippling flows of sound; the flows spiraling high and low; singing heaven and earth. I did not know this piece, and so I experienced it as utter fire, breath, chaos, and order.

Mary says the body is built on musical harmony, and our texts are the score of this musical harmony. Through Texts 1 and 2, I am given a somewhat linear (actually, spiraling), development of the Blueprint. The “Answer Sheet” (the handout titled Now Know Myself) is like an outline of the texts, illustrating the same story. It is a spiraling story of Transformation: Generation and Regeneration; building and breaking down; differentiation and relationship; separation and blending. 7th Depth, LIGHT, sparks the FIRE of 6th Depth: BREATH; the Desire to BE. 6th Depth is Totality and All Inclusive, yet in the Desire to BE, it differentiates, giving birth to Main Central Vertical Universal Harmonizing Energy, Major Vertical (Supervisor) Universal Harmonizing Energy (Left and Right) – Trinity Energy – and Diagonal (Mediator) Universal Harmonizing Energy. Depths 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 are all inherent aspects of the FIRE of 6th Depth, which striates into the specific qualities of each Depth as it slows in vibration, just as light separates into colors, both visible and invisible, within its vast spectrum.

As 6th Depth FIRE slows, it denses, and the 6 Depths inherent within Totality give birth to specific qualities inherent within their totality: The Safety Energy Locks. New chords of color, tone and meaning are born as relationships within each Depth and amongst the Depths develop. The Safety Energy Locks, born at the vibration of the Supervisor (Wisdom), speak the language of CAUSE (8th Depth): Pure Thought.

I’m thinking about the marriage of flesh and spirit…

“Many people treat their bodies as if they were rented from Hertz — something they are using to get around in but nothing they genuinely care about understanding.”
— Chungliang Al Huang

“As we explore the extraordinary interplay of energies between the many aspects of our personality — our needs, unconscious reactions, repressed emotions, aspirations and fears — with the functioning of our physical system and its capacity to maintain itself, we soon realise how very wise the body is. With its intricately detailed systems and operations it portrays infinite intelligence and compassion, constantly giving us the means to understand ourselves further, to confront issues we are not looking at, and to go beyond that which is holding us back.”
— Deb Shapiro

Scan your body with your awareness. Are you experiencing any aches and pains? Any stiffness?

What might your body be trying to tell you about how you are living your life?

“Your body is the ground and metaphor of your life, the expression of your existence. It is your Bible, your encyclopedia, your life story. Everything that happens to you is stored and reflected in your body. In the marriage of flesh and spirit divorce is impossible.”
— Gabrielle Roth

“What is always speaking silently is the body.”
— Norman Brown

Sara Harper on Safety Energy Lock 16

Sara Harper shares part of her life journey in the Summer issue of The Main Central Jin Shin Jyutsu Newsletter, issue Number 53, Summer 2006:

Safety Energy Lock “16 came into the universe meaning the basis of all human activities – breaking down of existing forms for new ones.” Harmonizes “the generative functions; skeletal balance; and tonify [tonifies] muscles.” Helps to clear the “head, back, elimination, tension/stress.”

In my early twenties I was driving home one evening from work when a drunk driver ran a red light going sixty miles an hour. I ended up in the hospital with numerous injuries. My mother came to the hospital to be with me and started right in with Jin Shin Jyutsu. The knot on my head started to shrink, and I got tingling in my toes. I had the hospital release me. I went home and started on the path to getting well. I started receiving regular sessions from Mary to get relief from the many injuries that I had.

One of the strange things that occurred from the brain trauma was my left eye would swell shut, and it would impair my vision and it was extremely painful and ugly. I had been going to Mary for almost a year since the accident and most of all the other projects had cleared. i was extremely concerned about my eye, and when I told Mary about how I had to ice my eye to reduce the swelling every day, she had something else in mind for me other than ice. Mary said, “Today we will clear the eye.”

Mary went straight to the opposite Safety Energy Lock 16 area and held her index finger on the tip of the anklebone. The pain was so intense I could barely stand it, and Mary was just barely touching the tip of the bone with her finger. After what seemed like an eternity she moved off the bone and proceeded to clear the entire 16 Safety Energy Lock area. Again it was very tender and I could hardly believe it could be so painful. When I asked Mary about the Safety Energy Lock 16, she said it would help to clear my head and vision.

The swelling around my eye never came back again like that, but on occasion it does swell if I am overtired. I now immediately go to the Safety Energy Lock 16 to help clear the swelling. If you look in Text 2 at the Gall Bladder Flow you can see how this dynamic relationship of “as above, so below” is so beautifully illustrated. To know the Safety Energy Locks as our truest friends and to utilize the Art and to heed their friendly concern is truly Living the Art of Jin Shin Jyutsu, and we can help ourselves out of misery. Thank you, Mary, you have given us so many beautiful treasures. Sometimes when I would lie down for a session with Mary, she would listen to my pulses, smile, and then she would say, “Lucky me, Lucky you, Lucky me, Lucky you!!”

Thank you, Sara.

Thank you, Mary.

Thank you, David.

A Personal Account of Critical Disharmony

Jill Holden shares part of her journey in the Summer issue of The Main Central Jin Shin Jyutsu Newsletter, issue Number 53, Summer 2006:

I’m often asked in class, and even in my treatment sessions with clients, the question, “Why do you think you got lymphoma when you had been involved with Jin Shin Jyutsu for 16 years before you were diagnosed?”

I’ve lived in this question for 10 years now, wondering the same thing myself. I never asked myself, “Why me?” – Rather, “How could this have happened?” In fact, prior to my diagnosis I was healthier than I’d ever been in my life.

There are so many possible answers and theories; the environment, heredity, diet, stress, lifestyle, destiny, karma, my past lives…and it goes on, but in truth the big answer is, “I don’t know.”

My diet was healthy, I exercised, practiced yoga, meditated, saw a homeopath, osteopath, and received biweekly Jin Shin Jyutsu sessions, to name some of the things I was doing. I was doing all the right things, and yet I got cancer.

Within a second,  my life was completely different. What I thought I knew, what I believed in, my whole orientation to life was turned upside down. I had no ground, no belief to hold on to. The only thing that seemed of value was to explore what meaning this had in my life.

Some things Mary had said came to me: “Now I know, I know nothing.” …to live in the groundlessness of my life, to really understand that all I have is this moment, maybe this day. A friend of mine with metastatic breast cancer said to me, “Jill, there are no bad days.” It’s not what happens to us, or what comes our way, but how we deal with what we’re given. How do we deal with adversity? Now Mary’s words come more alive than ever: “KNOW MYSELF BE IT IS, IS. AND AS IT IS, IT IS.”

Pema Chodron, a great Tibetan Buddhist nun says, “Right there in the uncertainty of everyday chaos is our own wisdom mind.”

As I was struggling with the question, “What happened here?” – one day Lynne Pflueger and I were talking. I mentioned the confusion I was having with all of this, and she said “Jin Shin Jyutsu doesn’t save you from your life. You don’t escape just because you’re doing all the right things. Life happens.” I was stunned by the simple truth of her statement and this became a turning point for me. It comes back to Now Know Myself. Another pearl from Pema Chodron that I love: “We are not striving to solve a problem, we are not striving to make the pain go away or become a better person. In fact we are giving up control altogether.”

In looking into this through the Jin shin Jyutsu lens, I’ve been examining this question over the last 10 years, and my experience of dealing with lymphoma has been illuminated from page 42, Text 2, Disharmony Occurring According To Age (critical). When I was 9 years old I had pretty severe asthma and allergies. This was also the year my grandfather died, and I was very close to him. So, a lot of 2nd Depth disharmony was there during the critical ages of 9 and 10 years old when the lungs are critical in the Order of Creation. It’s the beginning of the surface flows coming to meet at the Main Central Vertical at the center 13s. At age 41 I’m diagnosed with a tumor in my chest. In All Combined Energy – Timing on page 43, Text 2, there in the chest between the 13s and 14s lives 4th Depth, bladder and kidney. The relationship of 4th Depth disharmonizing 2nd Depth on the level of lumbar circle…it all comes together in a way that makes sense in these 2 pages. I can see how lymphoma makes sense if you follow it out from disharmony according to age.

And yet…I live in the mystery of it all. I know there’s a much bigger picture.

Live each day as though it’s your last. I’m off to Italy for 2-1/2 weeks to do just that! To reconnect with my roots, I’m going home. In the spirit of St. Francis, he says: “Be patient with all things, especially yourself. Healing needs patience.”

Thank you, Jill.

Thank you, Mary.

Thank you, David.

I’m thinking about motivation…

“Every human action, whether it has become positive or negative, must depend on motivation.”
— Dalai Lama

Monitoring what motivates me has helped me see how I am growing. I do things for different reasons now than I did 10 years ago. As we pay ongoing attention to our motives, we can see how both our conscious and unconscious attitudes are changing.

Here are some ways that our motives can shift with rising consciousness:

  • I desire
  • I want to collect things
  • I want to know
  • I want to serve
  • I want to be

What are your motives as you participate in life?

“There are three kinds of people and three kinds of richness:

  • people who want to have, to collect
  • people who want action, work and labor
  • people who want to be

“The real richness is in be-ness. People can take all that you have, all that you collected. People can stop your labor, or an accident can stop you. When you are, you never lose what you are.”
— Torkom Saraydarian

“You are what you think. You are what you go for. You are what you do!”
— Bob Richards

“A good intention clothes itself with power.”
— Ralph Waldo Emerson
