I’m thinking about making a difference…

“The spiritual life is a call to action. But it is a call to … action without any selfish attachment to the results.”
— Eknath Easwaran

Many of us feel deeply that we want to make a difference — we want our lives to mean something in the bigger scheme of life. While this is a noble motive, we might want to explore what lies at its root.

Does the drive to make a difference arise from ego’s need to feel worthy? If my ego is not convinced that I matter, I may want visible proof that I do by making some kind of impact on life.

Soul doesn’t need proof that it’s worthy. Soul thrives in being awake and connected. Perhaps if we let go of the pressure we feel from our ego’s need to be recognized, we will be more open and able to simply live soulfully. And by doing that, we WILL make a difference!

“A person’s worth is contingent upon who he is, not upon what he does, or how much he has. The worth of a person, or a thing, or an idea, is in being, not in doing, not in having.”
— Alice Mary Hilton

I’m thinking about knowing myself…

“In the final analysis, we count for something only because of the essential we embody, and if we do not embody that, life is wasted.”
— C.G. Jung

Where are you not being true to yourself?

All blocks arise when we’re not being authentic, when we’re not being true to ourselves. We know we’re not being authentic when we feel discomfort of any kind.

When our thoughts, feelings and actions align with our essence, we express the qualities of soul. Always trust that your soul knows what’s best for you.

Believe in yourself and act on your ideas. Give yourself permission to do what you want with your life. Take the initiative to set meaningful goals for yourself and achieve them. Begin to tell yourself why you CAN have what you want!

“A true knowledge of ourselves is knowledge of our power.”

Text 2, Bladder and Kidney Organ Function Energy, Part 2

We continue our review of Susan Brooks’ article about Fourth Depth: Bladder and Kidney Organ Function Energy in issue Number 45, Summer 2004 of The Main Central Jin Shin Jyutsu Newsletter. You may obtain this issue at

“The adrenals, the Fourth Depth component of the endocrine system, are the energy tank for the body. Mary has told us, [the] “Temperamental equilibrium of the individual is a definite help to the adrenals, and the normal functioning of these adrenal glands is reflected, in turn, in the optimism, kindliness and generosity of the disposition.” Mary says, “The adrenals,” the stress glands of the body, “wreak havoc on those who harbor unhealthy mental or emotional reactions.”

Fourth Depth study is one of a lifetime. Some aspects of the body ruled by Fourth Depth include reproduction, digestion, muscles, vascular harmony, glands, body chemistry, blood chemistry and blood sugar.

With respect to the seasons, Fourth Depth rules the wintertime. The term “still waters run deep” comes to mind here. Winter is an inward time during which much reflection, stillness and quiet necessarily occur as preparation for the bursting forth of the new life of springtime.

Mary often said she utilized an aspect of the Reversing and Increasing of the Fourth Depth Flow in every session she gave. We may benefit from the simple 3-step Reversing and Increasing the Fourth depth Flow (pg. 65, Text 1), to address those accumulations – things, memories, people, “treasures” – that no longer serve us and instead weigh us down. In conclusion, I’m reminded of a quote from Anne Morrow Lindberg’s book, Gifts from the Sea, “One cannot collect all the bountiful shells on the beach. One can collect only a few, and they are more beautiful if they are few.” Paracelsus, one of the greatest and illuminated minds of the 16th century, owned only 4 books – the Bible, Commentaries on the Bible, his lectures, and notes on his findings on medicine. I often wonder about the possibilities of individual, community and world transformation if we spend less time tending our possessions and more time pursuing what inspires us.

Bladder Function Energy:

As the descending helper for the Fourth Depth, the Bladder Flow sweeps the back clean – from head to toe – of past and present projects so that we can be in the NOW. The Bladder Function Energy, influenced by Libra, helps keep us in balance with 3 energy lines down either side of the back for balance. These 6 lines of energy keep us from getting off to one side or the other too much. Libra brings to us a shift in awareness between 4-6:00 p.m., during which time you may feel more balanced, except, of course, if you have a two-year old.

Libras tend to be too much in the world, too much of an extrovert, identifying with what is occurring in the external world, rather than within. I am reminded here of bumper cars at the amusement park, which have difficulty holding their own course.”

Text 2, Bladder and Kidney Organ Function Energy

For the past few weeks we have been looking at The Main Central publications that offer great insight into the contents of Text 2. Issue Number 45, Summer 2004 contains an article by Susan Brooks that has been very helpful to me – so I’ll share the information (with thanks to David for giving me permission) and at the same time remind my wonderful readers that you can obtain a copy of this issue, and all past issues, from the Scottsdale office; There is other information in this issue that would benefit any student of  Jin Shin Jyutsu.

Fourth depth: Bladder and Kidney Organ Function Energy

Fourth Depth: As Mary says, “Be the awareness and understanding of the Divine energy. Simply do not get in the way.” Do not obstruct the flow of life, be in it. This is Fourth Depth. When we experience effortless reality, synchronicity, a sense of overall well-being, this is what we call FLOW – the element water. A harmonious Fourth Depth is like a peaceful, easy feeling washing over us as we float downriver in a canoe on a clear, sunny day, gently being guided by the contours of the water.

When our life is in harmony, we are aware of easy communication between the worldly and spiritual realms. The information and connection between worlds continually uplift us and are vital to the transformation each breath brings us.

Mary stresses that when things start to go our way, it is usually because we stop going the wrong way down a one-way street. Ever been in a boat paddling against the current or into the wind? There is much effort, little movement, with the feeling of being stuck. Safety Energy Lock 23, the Fourth Depth helper, keeps us from getting stuck in the muck of life, giving us the boost we need to move forward, back to the FLOW.

On the 3rd or 4th day of a 5-day series of sessions I received from Mary (after daily bulls-eyeing various stubborn chords paralleling my spine), she said, “I keep emptying this out (my back), and you keep filling it up again.” Mary’s comment continues to be a reminder of the importance of consciously choosing our response to life – with love, breath and calm – or with fear. Choosing fear will continue to result in accumulations in the back (the 8 lines of energy, with the Kidney and Bladder Function Energy combined).

F E A R – the attitude of the Fourth Depth, is the nutrition for a litany of effects. In Text 2, page 25, Mary tells us that F E A R is false evidence appearing real. I have a longtime Jin Shin Jyutsu friend who no longer says the word “fear”, she spells it out loud instead, affirming the illusory aspect of it. “Fear takes thousands of lives, whereas disorder itself takes only hundreds.” Especially with the sophistication of modern media spreading terror stories worldwide, within a matter of seconds, holding the index finger is as essential as ever.”
