13 Things to Remember When Life Gets Rough

THE MIND UNLEASHED

By: Carol Morgan, Life hack

We’ve all gone through hard times. And we all get through them. However, some get through them better than others. So what is their secret? Most of it has to do with attitude. Here are 13 things to remember when life gets rough:

  1. What is, is. Buddha’s famous saying tells us: “It is your resistance to ‘what is’ that causes your suffering.” Think about that for a minute. It means that our suffering only occurs when we resist how things are. If you can change something, then take action! Change it! But if you can’t change it, then you have two choices: (1) either accept it and let go of the negativity, or (2) make yourself miserable by obsessing over it.
  2.  It’s only a problem if you think it’s a problem. Many times, we are our own worst enemy. Happiness is really dependent on perspective. If you think something is a problem, then your thoughts and emotions will be negative. But if you think it’s something you can learn from, then suddenly, it’s not a problem anymore.
  3.  If you want things to change, you need to start with changing yourself. Your outer world is a reflection of your inner world. Don’t you know people whose lives are chaotic and stressful? And isn’t that largely because they feel chaotic inside? Yes, it is. We like to think that changing our circumstances will change us. But we have it backwards—we need to change ourselves first before our circumstances will change.
  4.  There is no such thing as failure—only learning opportunities. You should just wipe the word “failure” right out of your vocabulary. All great people who have ever achieved anything have “failed” over and over. In fact, I think it was Thomas Edison who said something like, “I did not fail at inventing the light bulb, I just first found 99 ways that it didn’t work.” Take your so-called “failures” and learn something from them. Learn how to do it better next time.
  5.  If you don’t get something you want, it just means something better is coming. That’s hard to believe sometimes, I know. But it’s true. Usually, when you look back at your life, you will be able to see why it was actually a good thing that something didn’t work out. Maybe the job you didn’t get would have made you spend more time away from your family, but the job you did get was more flexible. Just have faith that everything happens exactly the way it’s supposed to.
  6.  Appreciate the present moment. This moment will never come again. And there is always something precious about every moment. So don’t let it pass you by! Soon it will just be a memory. Even moments that don’t seem happy can be looked upon as something that you might miss someday. As the country song by Trace Adkins says, “You’re gonna miss this…you’re gonna want this back. You’re gonna wish these days hadn’t gone by so fast….you may not know this now, but you’re gonna miss this…”
  7.  Let go of desire. Most people live with “attached mind.” What this means is that they attach themselves to a desire, and when they don’t get it, their emotions plummet into negativity. Instead, try to practice “detached mind.” That means that when you want something, you will still be happy whether you get it or not. Your emotions remain happy or neutral.
  8.  Understand and be grateful for your fears. Fear can be a great teacher. And overcoming fears can also make you feel victorious. For example, when I was in college, I feared public speaking (one of the top 3 fears of all humans). So I find it humorous now that not only do I speak in front of a group every day by being a college professor, I also teach public speaking! Overcoming fears just takes practice. Fear is really just an illusion. It’s optional.
  9.  Allow yourself to experience joy. Believe it or not, I know way too many people who don’t allow themselves to have fun. And they don’t even know how to be happy. Some people are actually addicted to their problems and the chaos in them so much that they wouldn’t even know who they are without them. So try to allow yourself to be happy! Even if it’s just for a small moment, it’s important to focus on joy, not your hardships.
  10.  Don’t compare yourself to other people. But if you do compare yourself, compare yourself with people who have it worse than you. Unemployed? Be grateful that you live in a country that gives unemployment compensation, because most people in the world live on less that $750 a year. So you don’t look like Angelina Jolie? Well, I bet there are more people who don’t than do. And you are probably way better looking than than you think. Focus on that.
  11.  You are not a victim. You need to get out of your own way. You are only a “victim” of your own thoughts, words and actions. No one “does” something to you. You are the creator of your own experience. Take personal responsibility and realize that you can get out of your hard times. You just need to start with changing your thoughts and actions. Abandon your victim mentality and become victorious. From victim to VICTOR!
  12.  Things can—and do—change. “And this too shall pass” is one of my favorite sayings. When we are stuck in a bad situation, we think that there is no way out. We think nothing will ever change. But guess what? It will! Nothing is permanent except death. So get out of the habit of thinking that things will always be this way. They won’t. But you do need to take some sort of action for things to change. It won’t magically happen all on its own.
  13.  Anything is possible. Miracles happen every day. Really—they do. I wish I had enough space to write about all the miraculous things that have happened to people I know—from healing stage 4 cancer naturally to having their soul mate appear out of nowhere. Trust me: it happens all the time. You just need to believe it does. Once you do, you have won the battle.

I’m thinking about primal source co-creation…

CO-CREATION

“[Manifestation is] the art of fashioning a co- creative, synchronistic, and mutually supportive relationship between the inner creative energies of a person’s own mind and spirit and their counterpart within the larger world in order to bring a new and desirable situation into being.”
— David Spangler

I have always understood that Spirit works through us. Only recently have I really come to appreciate how Spirit works WITH us. The divine life force partners with our unique perspective, our passion and our skills to create new life situations.

We are not passive vessels for God’s will. To realize our highest potential, we must co-create with the divine.

“We must see ourselves as co-manifestors — partners in manifestation — all engaged in the primal act of unfoldment and emergence. Each act of manifestation may be directed toward a specific outcome, but it also contributes to the greater manifestation of the wholeness, love, compassion, and creativity of the primal source from which we all come.”

Text 2, Bladder and Kidney Function Energies, Part 6

We continue our review of Cynthia (Lenssen) Broshi’s article about Bladder and Kidney Function Energies in issue Number 46, Fall 2004 of The Main Central Jin Shin Jyutsu Newsletter. You may obtain this issue at http://www.jsjinc.net.

Kidney Function Energy (continued)

“I’d always enjoyed flying until soon after Lucy died, when I felt real terror in the air. This became a genuine hassle when I started using planes frequently in order to present classes. One day I recognized this experience as a version of page 39 in Text 2: Kidney Function Energy Separates and Overflows. There was no ingestion of animal matter involved, it was a question of BEING animal matter. I felt body and spirit as disconnected; I was at war with my destiny. The next flight I listened deeply to the panic, which spanned the whole sphere of life and death, until I knew, simply, that this could be a perfect day to die. I acquiesced, and with the exhale came calm. After repeating this process several flights (aided by index finger) – each time truly arriving at acceptance of not-knowing – the project passed. Fourth Depth is Power over obstacles.

Fear of my transience can result in “stucks”, as Mary says, of many kinds. The mercurial 4th Depth can mask fear as worry, anger, pride, pretense, accumulations, sorrow. Most cultures know to utilize the arts to soften and transform the blow of death. Participating with creation is a critical need of the soul. As the Artist I ascend from 4th Depth (fear) to 6th Depth (Source), making possible, through 3rd depth (source), the completion of the star I AM.

Always, inherent within our grandest capacities, are our greatest projects. So a favorite project for Scorpio is power. “When power leads man toward arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations…The artist…becomes the last champion of the individual mind and sensibility against an intrusive society…” ~ John F. Kennedy. Whether the “intrusive society” is “external” or “internal” doesn’t matter – to be the Artist, in all my occupations and relations, is the great harmonizer of mankind. Scorpio is associated with the scorpion, who stings, with the eagle, who sees and kills, and with the phoenix, who brings music to the world. (I just love it that Scottsdale is a wing of Phoenix!) When about to die, the phoenix sings a song so beautiful that all creation must stop – 9 – to listen. His song re-Minds us of what’s vital to our Being. Then he bursts into flame – 6th Depth – and from his ending, from the ashes of his form, new life arises.”

Thank you, Cynthia.

Thank you, Mary.

Thank you, David.

I’m thinking about changing direction…

TIME TO CHANGE DIRECTION?

“Employ the power of positive quitting. Most of us view quitting as something negative, but it’s not. ‘Winners never quit,’ we’re told, when, in reality, winners quit all the time: choosing to stop doing things that aren’t creating the results they desire. When you quit all the things that aren’t working for you, when you quit tolerating all the negative things that hold you back, you’ll create a positive ‘charge’ in your life as well as create the space in your life for more positive experiences.”
— Jim Allen

“I like thinking of possibilities. At any time, an entirely new possibility is liable to come along and spin you off in an entirely new direction. The trick, I’ve learned, is to be awake to the moment.”
— Doug Hall

“Persons and societies do not submit passively to surroundings and events. They make choices as to the places where they live and the activities in which they engage — choices based on what they want to be, to do and to become. Furthermore, persons and societies often change their goals and ways; they can even retrace their steps and start in a new direction if they believe they are on a wrong course. Thus, whereas animal life is prisoner of biological evolution which is essentially irreversible, human life has the wonderful freedom of social evolution which is rapidly reversible and creative. Wherever human beings are concerned, trend is not destiny.”

Text 2, Bladder and Kidney Function Energies, Part 5

We continue our review of Cynthia (Lenssen) Broshi’s article about Bladder and Kidney Function Energies in issue Number 46, Fall 2004 of The Main Central Jin Shin Jyutsu Newsletter. You may obtain this issue at http://www.jsjinc.net.

Kidney Function Energy (continued)

“Flowing horizontally across the pelvic floor from Coccyx to Safety Energy Lock 15, Kidney Function completes its sphere, scattering at the anterior groin, nourishing my joy and laughter. (As with Bladder Function Energy, Kidney Function shares many relationships with 2nd Depth.) Discomforts in the 15s and thighs with menstruation indicate a Kidney Function need. Likely there is a scanty menstrual flow – 4th Depth is not fully eliminating. The menstrual cycle functions as a force of Regeneration for the being, breaking down and eliminating dirt, dust and greasy grime from body and mind. When we have the opportunity for rest and quiet during the first day or two of menstruation, many women experience this as a time of keen sensitivity and spiritual awareness. The window of Safety Energy Lock 4 is open to all of Nature. Utilizing 4th Depth Flows before the menstrual period harmonizes this opening. (For heavy flow, and PMS projects, go also to 3rd Depth, particularly Liver Function.)

For men and women alike, 4th Depth, the Flow, helps Safety Energy Lock 9 (the number of 2nd Depth: Body) put a period on the past. Krishnamurti says, “There must be a period in which the inventor is silent…sees something new.” Robert Rauschenberg, a seminal (as in “a foundation for new possibilities”) artist whose work, over decades was powerfully original, says, “Art shouldn’t be a fixed idea that I have before I start making it. I want it to include all the fragility and doubt I go through the day with…I want the insecurity of not knowing…” Open to the mystery of body and non-body, Kidney Function Energy helps build the portals of conception, birth and death. Kidney Function ascends into the Source, 6th Depth, at 8:00 p.m. (8: as below, so above; Magic), a.k.a. 20:00 (20: Everlasting Eternity: the birthplace and death time of 4th Depth at the vibration of 12 Organ Function Energy). To transport Life, I must relinquish my hold on life. I must dive into the not-knowing and be the Artist, simply listening and discovering. The Art of jumper-cabling is a kind of dying, the release of limitations. And as Mary so often reminds me, jumper-cabling is listening to the Harmony (Venus). “At the heart of us, no matter what our imperfections, is the silent pulse of Perfection.” An anonymous Haiku, translated by Sam Hamill says: “To learn how to die watch cherry blossoms, observe chrysanthemums.”

To be continued…

I’m thinking about feeding my mind…

WHAT DO YOU FEED YOUR MIND?

“I then remembered why I avoid the ‘news,’ if that’s what you want to call it. Our ‘news’ is a misnomer, and it’s more like ‘the ongoing train wreck you can tune in to at any time when you want to divert yourself from your purpose and your happiness… lose your faith in humanity… and go from feeling like things are pretty good to feeling like the world is going to sh*t and why bother going on, I mean really?'”
— Ali Brown

Our beliefs create our reality. If we wish to live happy, healthy lives, it’s vital that we feed our minds healthy, nourishing material. The negative, sensational focus of today’s ‘news’ media hardly serves to enlighten us about the true state of the planet. Let’s open to our limitless potential by keeping our focus firmly on what uplifts us.

“The world is not dying. It’s not falling apart. It’s changing. I personally believe that pessimism is an indulgence, despair an insult to the imagination. There are wonderfully positive things out there.”
— Wade Davis

Text 2, Bladder and Kidney Function Energies, Part 4

We continue our review of Cynthia (Lenssen) Broshi’s article about Bladder and Kidney Function Energies in issue Number 46, Fall 2004 of The Main Central Jin Shin Jyutsu Newsletter. You may obtain this issue at http://www.jsjinc.net.

Kidney Function Energy

“Kidney Function gives stamina. It is my Root of Life and the source of developing, maturing and reproducing. The word “stamina” is derived from stamen – the pollen-producing reproductive organ of a flower. Stamen, in Latin, is the thread of the warp, the thread of human life – woven by the Fates and then cut loose – so I am free to exercise My Will (23). When a harmonized Bladder Function transforms into Kidney Function, my will resonates with Thy Will. My desire is to BE a force of Nature, to be utilized for the greater good.

Fourth Depth is the Spear of Creative Thinking. Kidney Function, green-blue (the color also of 13: Imaginative Intelligence), streams diagonally across the sole of the foot, arising forcefully along the seams of my being, differentiating, yet uniting, the Underworld with the Light. Traversing deep alongside the bone of the medial leg and thigh, its pathway borders front and back, inhale and exhale. Scorpio expresses through Kidney Function and is ruled by Mars and Pluto. A water sign in the Water of 4th Depth (motivated by fire and mystery), Kidney Function flows deep as the Creative Void (9th Depth), the fountain of anti-matter which yearns to know Itself. Here is power to conduct the Invisible. Here is my desire to participate in the creation of life – to conceive a new idea, a new world, a new being. Erotic attraction, the heroic quest, the magical transformation of form to non-form to new-form – Kidney Function is speaking. Weaving a hammock of protection and virility across the pelvic floor, it is key for reproductive and sexual energy, and for all creative urges. It creates a sphere of creative thought. The Root of Life, it grows from the little toe through the root of the foot (Center 6) to rectum, reproductive organ, umbilicus, kidney, bladder, liver, spleen, stomach, lung and heart, cleaning and nourishing. Rising through the throat, one part scatters at the root of the tongue, energizing my sense of taste (the sense of 4th Depth), my capacity to distinguish qualities, enjoy nourishment, and to discern what is aesthetically harmonious.

From the tongue Kidney Function ascends, flanking the centerline of my body, up and over the top of the head, and descending close along the spine. Safety Energy Lock 4, the Window admitting Light and Air, lives in a 4th Depth area of the head, and Kidney Function washes this window. For changes in consciousness, this may be a helpful flow to utilize. It is a warrior (Scorpio, ruled by Mars), protecting the Main Central itself, the endocrine system and the physical organs of my body. As a Toe Flow it delivers energy for critical needs of my body and mind – literally keeping body and spirit integrated. It enlivens the immune system and, utilized in Fall, will bolster me for winter’s damp and chill. Kidney Function is a key player in the production and assimilation of the amalgamation of breath, food and Trinity Energy that is described in pages 60 and 61 of Text 2.”

I’m thinking about service…

ARE YOU SERVING?

“You may be good, but what are you good for? You’ve got to be good for something. You’ve got to be about some project, some task that requires you to be humble and obedient to the universal principles of service.”
— Stephen R. Covey

“We had to learn ourselves, and furthermore we had to teach the despairing men, that it did not matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life but instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life, daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for the individual.”
— Victor Frankl

“If you think you’re too small to have an impact, try going to bed with a mosquito in the room.”
— Anita Roddick

Bladder Function Energy (continued)

“Trinity Energy flowing up the back, and 4th Depth, “I, the individual” flowing down the back – no wonder I can go to Bladder Function to help any back projects, as well as for muscle spasms, muscle projects, and the mind which is in spasm. “The burden of material thoughts makes the back weak.” – Mary. Tears are Bladder Function unloading, and one demonstration of the relationship of 4th and 2nd Depth. Kato Sensei gives us a flow pattern to harmonize the most lateral line of Bladder Function, useful in conjunction with our harmonizing pattern in Text 2. This combination can be magic when the head, neck, shoulder, etc., are crying out in pain. The Self-Help Flow for Bladder Function was my first experience of receiving jumper-cables. Jill showed me this flow when I told her I’d “had” sciatica constantly for two years since my seventh month of pregnancy (which just happened to be the month of my Sun sign, October: Libra). I utilized the flow, left and right, 30 minutes, twice a day. On the fifth day the sciatic pain disappeared. At this time my daughter, Lucy, born with health challenges, had been in a nearly critical state for months. I hadn’t even been aware of the dark cloud enveloping me those months until the fifth day, when it evaporated along with the sciatica. 4th Depth is the Great Reconciler of Life, exhaling hurts and attitudes.

Carolyn W. Casey, an astrologer extraordinaire, says, “Love forms an electrical arc between us and the beloved, opening up a current that flows both ways.” What a beautiful description of our Art. The Main Central Vertical Harmonizing Energy is one manifestation of this arc, as is Bladder Function Energy. (My understanding of the astrological aspects of Jin Shin Jyutsu, which began with Petra and Wayne, is being furthered by Carolyn’s book, Making the Gods Work for You, and contributes a great deal to this article.)

Bladder Function opens my entire system to the “infinite aesthetic powers of the Creator.” The first step of the Self-Help Flow: center 12 (Thy will) with coccyx (source of my manifesting) fills my being with the Source of Main Central. When Venus opens my heart to Beauty, the birthplace of Bladder Function Energy (20: Everlasting Eternity) is manifesting. When Lucy was near the end of her life and very ill, I depended on Venus to keep me sane and functioning. No matter how difficult our state of being at the moment, there was some hint available – light falling through a window and glinting gold the fuzz on her forehead, a meadowlark’s fluting call at dawn – of the great Beauty, which is Eternity, within which our story unfolds. When we feel we cannot stand our story another moment,  Venus tells us otherwise, giving us release through tears and a compassionate detachment on which to stand, even in roiling seas.

Standing is a function of 4th Depth – the capacity to stand on my own two feet – to be me, in balance with society, Here, NOW, unafraid. Kidney Function Energy, the ascending aspect of 4th Depth at the vibration of 12 Organ Function Energy, gives me the uprightness to stand up, to meet my life and my Creator.”

To be continued…

I’m thinking about impossibilities…

WHAT IF… ?

“The universe is full of magical things patiently waiting for our wits to grow sharper.”
— Eden Phillpotts

What if you were to pretend that you were healthy, wealthy and wise? What if you were to decide to be happy, no matter what else was happening?

Take the power of ‘what if…’ seriously, and you will grasp the power to create a world of your own design. Everything, EVERYTHING begins in the imagination. Put it to work constructively for you.

“The greatest discovery of my generation is that a human being can alter his life by altering his attitudes.”
— William James

“Sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.”
— Lewis Carroll
