I’m thinking…

…about Tao

All the world talks about my Tao with such familiarity –

What folly!

Tao is not something found at the marketplace or passed on from father to son

It is not something gained by knowing or lost by forgetting

If Tao were like this

It would have been lost and forgotten long ago

I have three treasures that I cherish and hold dear

the first is love

the second is moderation

the third is humility

With love one is fearless

With moderation one is abundant

With humility one can fill the highest position

Now if one  is fearless but has no love

abundant but has no moderation

rises up but has no humility

Surely he is doomed

Love vanquishes all attackers

It is impregnable in defense

When Heaven wants to protect someone does it send an army?

No, it protects him with love

Cats: “They Just Know…”

I love working with animals and have experienced wonderful results. Also, I’ve had sessions myself where a cat assisted the practitioner by lying – asleep and snoring lightly – on my pubis! My own cat will jump on the table to lie by the client and bring her own healing energy into the flow.

In the Winter 1994/1995 issue of The Main Central Jin Shin Jyutsu Newsletter, Number 7, Bill Landon shares the following:

“Over the years, I’ve known a number of cats who understood well the power of Jin Shin Jyutsu. This piece is about the behavior of three such cats.

Anouk was somewhat feral, having lived her fifteen years outdoors in the deep countryside. Her life experience had given her many amazing survival skills, but we felt that her greatest talent by far was that of simply knowing when someone was getting a Jin Shin Jyutsu session. No matter where outdoor she was (on the roof, in the woodpile, or under bushes skulking for birds), she always knew when one of us laid hands upon the other to do a flow. Within moments, she would yammer and scratch at the door or climb and dangle from the window screens until, in order to preserve them, we would let her in. And once in, she would join the receiver on the bed, reach her paw for the treater’s hand and with a single huntress claw extended slightly, bring that treating hand over to her. If the treater attempted to withdraw the hand, Anouk would insist with more firmly gripping claws. When finally the second hand joined the first on her body, she would roll over and relax. She especially liked 11:15s and 11:25s, and, of course, anything on the 4s and 23s. The need Anouk felt for a Jin Shin Jyutsu treatment was expressed through her hunting instinct – a consistent technique: grab on and wait till the other acquiesced.

Years later, back in town, Kitty, our neighbor Rita’s cat, visited us most every day. She knew that I would feed her scraps. Eventually, she discovered the amazing power in Kyoko’s hands. that changed her life, and from then on she had two jobs each day; 1) to listen for Rita’s car returning home from work, bringing with it the prospect of an early dinner; and 2) to watch for Kyoko walking home, bringing with her the prospect of an early treatment. In either instance, Kitty would come yammering from her lair in the bushes. If it was Rita who arrived, Kitty would head for the door. If it was Kyoko who approached, Kitty would lovingly present herself; that is, she would roll onto her back, all four feet in the air, and crane her neck to watch for Kyoko’s hand reaching down towards her 15s. From that point on, Kitty’s behavior was much the same as Anouk’s. Each of these outdoorsy females enforced her desire for treatment with her claws, and would not relent until utterly under the flow. While Anouk was pure huntress, Kitty was somewhat domesticated, like the house cat which rewards its feeder with cute antics and loving attention after the meal. Kitty just switched the order of things around: she offered her cute approach and affectionate greeting as bait, and when the treating hand made contact, she clamped onto it firmly.

Buffy, an elderly male cat, lived with Debbie, a JSJ practitioner, who regularly saw a steady clientele in her home. In a sense, Buffy could have as much JSJ as he wished by joining Debbie’s willing clients for their sessions.

When I had my weekly session Buffy always climbed onto the bed and lay down along my main central, his head pointing the same direction as mine. He made no attempts to hog or hijack the session; he slept in a civilized way from the very beginning. But beyond that, what is truly remarkable, he was self-limiting. Even in deep slumber, Buffy seemed to know fairly accurately when he had enough. At that point, usually after half to three-quarters of an hour, he would either withdraw directly or, most interestingly of all, get up, turn around 180 degrees and lie back down on me for a while with his polarity reversed to the flow, before finally leaving the treatment area completely.

This apparent quirk cemented in my mind the belief that Buffy was a cat of rare discernment. This apparent quirk was unprejudiced behavioral testimony confirming an oft stated tip from another healing art, Bio Circuitry, that also works with the flow of life energy. There, it is said that if the receiver or self-helper seems a bit too groggy, disoriented, confused or slow to refocus after a treatment, s/he may be stabilized and brought quickly to focused consciousness if the treater will again briefly place hands upon the receiver, but with polarity reversed, say, with the right hand to the back of the head and the left hand to the sacrum, for right handed people. This was the genius of Buffy. He knew and used this fine point of artistry as needed, by reversing himself to my flow.

So here are the antics of three loving cats. And now it might well be asked what you have learned from your own or others’ pets in the flow. It’s worth consideration.”

…about Tao

Why do the hundred rivers turn and rush toward the sea?

Because it naturally stays below them

He who wishes to rule over the people must speak as if below them

He who wishes to lead the people must walk as if behind them

So the Sage rules over the people but he does not weigh them down

He leads the people but he does not block their way

The Sage stays low so the world never tires of exalting him

He remains a servant so the world never tires of making him its king

What is a Depth?

Wayne Hackett, one of the Jin Shin Jyutsu instructors, was asked what is a Depth? He responded by saying that “a Depth is a dimension of life, which develops as we go. It is a state of our being.”

When Rima Lurie, a Jin Shin Jyutsu practitioner from Gold Hill, CO, was asked what is a Depth, she said, “Responding to the question about how I would explain the Depths in Jin Shin Jyutsu, I immediately see a vast body of water. Visualizing as if from within the water, and from the side, I am aware of sunlight hitting the surface, the brilliant upper layers becoming shadowed in increasing graduations downward. Perception of sound waves and temperature varies with distance from the surface, and distinct life-like forms characterize the realms. Without rigid boundaries, unique qualities and layers are evident, each being essential to the existence of the whole. Yet, because of fluidity and overlap among the layers, currents, changes, and circumstances in any one place have ramifications everywhere. A water spider makes subtle rippling waves. A trout rising from the depths catches a fly near the surface, sinks…the ripples spread. Wind strengthens, creating waves; in turn, all the Depths respond.”

I’m thinking…

…about Tao

The ancient ones were simple-hearted and blended with the common people

They did not shine forth

They did not rule with cleverness

So the nation was blessed

Now the rulers are filled with clever ideas and the lives of people are filled with hardship

So the nation is cursed

He who knows the play of Tao and Te knows the nature of the universe

Tao brings forth Te from its own being

Te expands in all directions filling every corner of the world becoming the splendor of all creation

Yet at every moment Te seeks Tao

This is the movement that guides the universe

This is the impulse that leads all things back home

Safety Energy Lock 19 (Part 4)

Issue Number 29, Summer 2000 of The Main Central Jin Shin Jyutsu Newsletter contains an article about SEL 19.  The article is based on comments received in response to the inquiry: Why is Safety Energy Lock 19 included in the anchor steps of both the Umbilicus and Diaphragm Function Energy flow patterns?

For readers who have taken at least one 5-day Seminar, you will want to look at Text 2. If you haven’t taken a 5-day Seminar as yet, you can look at the Safety Energy Lock Figure in this category. Or I could tell you: SEL 19 is located on the inside of the elbow more on the thumb side, however, since each SEL is a 6-inch diameter sphere, it actually covers that whole 6-inch area of the elbow/upper & lower arm.

Melinda Buckwalter submitted her “Jinspirations”:

“Safety Energy Lock 19 is included in the anchor steps of both the Diaphragm and Umbilicus Flows. Both organ flows pass through Safety Energy Lock 19. In the case of the Umbilicus Flow the 19 used is on the flow itself whereas in the Diaphragm Flow it is on the opposite 19 to the flow side. Mysterious! The Diaphragm and Umbilicus are mysterious. They are our blueprint, our negative, the flip-flop reflection of ourselves in the heaven/earth, as above/so below mirror. Energetically the Diaphragm Flow ascends but helps the descending; the Umbilicus Flow descends and helps the ascending. They are magical, through the looking glass Alice, the secret to how the 1 as Source/Potential can manifest as the many, experienced 9. These two opposite qualities come together to form and inform the number 19.

On a physical level the diaphragm’s action in the body is also mysterious, backwards and counter intuitive. When we breathe in, filling and expanding the belly, the diaphragm flattens out. When the belly flattens on the exhale the diaphragm is at its greatest dome-shaped splendor. Imaging the shape of the diaphragm in the body while you breathe takes practice. Try it! The umbilical cord cut at birth leaves us a belly button, a reminder of the mystery from whence we came and whence we shall return. The symbol 8, “magic”, reminds me of the placement of the umbilicus and diaphragm in the body at the crossroads where heaven and earth join, communicate, and reflect around the central dot. The umbilicus as belly button is our dot on our waistline around which we reflect, arms and head above, legs and pelvis below, reminding us of our true origin. The diaphragm’s shape like the vault of heaven is also located at the crossroads of the waistline separating heaven and earth. Its legs, the crura, like columns that hold up the sky, reach down to Lumbar 1 and Lumbar 2 at the level of the belly button.

What is special about 19 that helps the Diaphragm/Umbilicus in its central reflective role? As they say in real estate: “Location! Location! Location!” The 19 is located in the middle at the ‘umbilicus’ of the arm; the elbow. The elbow even has a dimple reminiscent of the navel on its back side. Look in the mirror! 19 knows something about being in the middle. It is on the Mediator, that great communicator between left and right. Thus 19 is in a position to communicate and receive information not only from above and below but from left and right as well. In touch with everybody, 19 is the collective intelligence. No wonder 19 is leadership and authority! Located at the nexus of communication, 19 is the shining Sun who communicates his influence by radiating effortlessly. 19’s powerful location explains the interlacing effect of the 19, 9 and 14 all located on the waistline. 19 – Sun, 9 – all-inclusive, 14 – Sagittarius. Did you know that the center/navel of the Milky Way Galaxy is in/near Sagittarius! If the 14/umbilical area is the center of the galaxy of our body it makes sense that 19, the sun, is located on the arm like the spiral arm of the galaxy! Then 9, as all-inclusive could be the Black Hole (White Hole!) at the galactic center, the “every ending is the seed of a fresh beginning” of quantum physics and our physical body. Celestial Anatomy!

Everything about 19 speaks of the middle. 19 is in the 3rd Depth – the other Middle flow to which the 6th Depth returns in the Order of Creation. 19 is the fourth of seven, in the middle of the Safety Energy locks of the 3rd Depth, 16 17 18 19 20 21 22. 19 is the letter S, half of an 8, again speaking to its role as man in the middle communicating, coordinating and in touch, its own mirror image above, below, left, and right. because of its reflective power, 19 helps on the same or opposite side to the flow itself. No wonder 19 is such a powerful helper to the 6th Depth organ flows as they function to reflect the heavenly plan into earthly delight.”

Safety Energy Lock 19 (Part 3)

Here is what Karen Moore offered:

“Safety Energy Lock 19 has struck me as being responsible for the free flow of energy in the arms, from the chest through the fingers and from the fingers into the chest. Diaphragm Function Energy is a chest flow and Umbilicus Function Energy is a finger flow. With the harmony of the 19s, our authority and leadership, we can, of our own accord and inclination, consciously embrace our surroundings to get a better look and feel, and bring to the Self what we want and what we need. On the other hand, we can use our arms and our 19s to guard our most vulnerable parts and keep out draining or unwanted influences. So, with the harmony of 19 we can embrace and bring close, and we can guard and maintain a space of integrity, which points to the function of the Diaphragm and the Umbilicus Function Energy.

Dr. Paul Foster Case speaks about Key 19 in the Tarot as representing the Sun, the Source of All Earthly Life, and our heart chakra, which adapts and coordinates the physical body with its immediate environment and gives power to our relationships with things, beings, and time and space. I see the Diaphragm and Umbilicus Function Energy “magnetically” attracting and manifesting  through the exhale and the inhale this radiant energy from the SUN. If our arms and fingers are tense, we grasp unto death those things we think will make us happy and balanced. With such a rigid grasp we cannot receive, nor can we freely give. If the fingers are tense, the 19s cannot give or receive. If the 19s are tense, the connection between our chest and our fingers is lost; hence our connection to our Source is lost. Our heart chakra closes or is impaired. We lose vitality and strength. We become weak-hearted or hard-hearted. I see the 19s as the action of the Mediator, mediating between our manifested and unmanifested world of the Diaphragm Function Energy and Umbilicus Function Energy…our exhale and our inhale. Of course, 19 is vital as an anchor step for each of these flows!”

I’m thinking…

…about Tao

A still mind can easily hold the truth

The difficulties yet to come can easily be avoided

The feeble are easily broken

The small are easily scattered

Begin your task before it becomes a burden

Put things in order before they get out of hand

Remember,

A tree that fills a man’s embrace grows from a seedling

A tower nine stories high starts with one brick

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step

Act and it’s ruined

Grab and it’s gone

People on the verge of success often lose patience and fail in their undertakings

Be steady from the beginning to the end and you won’t bring on failure

The Sage desires that which has no desires and teaches that which cannot be taught

He does not value the objects held by a few but only that which is held by everyone

He guides men back to their own treasure and helps all things come to know the truth they have forgotten

All this he does without a stir

I’m thinking about verse 63 of the Tao…

Act without acting

Give without giving

Taste without tasting

Tao alone becomes all things great and all things small

It is the One in many

It is the many in One

Let Tao become all your actions

then your wants will become your treasure

your injury will become your blessing

Take on difficulties while they are still easy

Do great things while they are still small

Step by step the world’s burden is lifted

Piece by piece the world’s treasure is amassed

So the Sage stays with his daily task and accomplishes the greatest thing

Beware of those who promise a quick and easy way for much ease brings many difficulties

Follow your path to the end

Accept difficulty as an opportunity

This is the sure way to end up with no difficulties at all

Safety Energy Lock 19 (Part 2)

Issue Number 29, Summer 2000 of The Main Central Jin Shin Jyutsu Newsletter contains an article about SEL 19.  The article is based on comments received in response to the inquiry: Why is Safety Energy Lock 19 included in the anchor steps of both the Umbilicus and Diaphragm Function Energy flow patterns?

Or I could tell you: SEL 19 is located on the inside of the elbow more on the thumb side, however, since each SEL is a 6-inch diameter sphere, it actually covers that whole 6-inch area of the elbow/upper & lower arm.

As we continue, we shall read what Ali Hammer wrote:

“Here are a few ideas as to why Safety Energy Lock 19 is included in the anchor steps of Diaphragm and Umbilicus flows. First, 19 helps the waistline energy, descending and ascending, and both Diaphragm and Umbilicus are involved in helping balance above the waist and below the waist.

19 is one of the “all-inclusive” numbers, being all colors, all musical notes, all planets, etc. Because Diaphragm and Umbilicus are expressions of the totality, the undivided state of the 6th Depth, it seems appropriate that a number containing all the vibrations of the universe would be supporting these flows.

In a similar vein, looking at the numerology, 19 adds up to a 1 which gives us the energy of oneness and unity. These flows are continually bringing us back to the unity of the 6th Depth, the Diaphragm by helping us to perceive the totality and the Umbilicus by recharging the body with energy from the Source.

In ancient wisdom 19 is “collecting” or “collective intelligence”. Paul Foster Case says, “The Collective Intelligence concentrates all the modes of consciousness which have gone before, and combines them together in a new form,” – i.e. it’s about relationship. To collect is to assemble, to bring or come together. The Umbilicus, in bringing warmth and harmony to relationships, is using this Collective Intelligence to make sure all the functions work happily together. The Diaphragm expresses this energy of 19 by assembling the energy of the totality, the vital life force, to create the blueprint, the root of the phenomena of one’s life.
