I’m thinking…

…about the Tao.

The best way to live is to be like water
For water benefits all things and goes against none of them
It provides for people and even cleanses those places a man is loath to go
In this way it is just like Tao

Live in accordance with the nature of things;
Build your house on solid ground
Keep your mind still
When giving, be kind
When speaking, be truthful
When ruling, be just
When working, be one-pointed
When acting, remember – timing is everything

One who lives in accordance with nature does not go against the way of things
He moves in harmony with the present moment always knowing the truth of just what to do

Jed Schwartz on SEL 16

Jed Schwartz shares his experience of Safety Energy Lock 16 in issue Number 19, Winter 1997/1998:

My first Jin Shin Jyutsu client came with a project of severe arthritis. She was unable to turn her head, had limited movement in all her limbs, and experienced constant pain which only increased with movement. Her M.D. told her that there was nothing to do other than take aspirin and learn to live with the pain.

Listening to her pulses as she lay there, I had no idea what they meant. Then I remembered Mary telling us that SEL 16 helps all arthritis, releasing the Achilles tendon so the tissue between the tendon and ankle is empty and flexible.

Praying, I began to hold 16 and 5 (Special Body Function No. 3), and then 9 and 26 with 5 and 16, and began moving up the Achilles toward low 8. When the session was over and several flows focusing on 16 were completed, I waited expectantly. NO CHANGE! I had arranged before hand for a six-treatment series over a period of two weeks, so my client returned two days later.

I prayed more fervently and focused the entire session on combinations involving SEL 16. Again, no change! Returning the next day, she grabbed me and gave me a hug and a kiss because on the drive over, she was able to turn her head for the first time in 12 years. The SEL 16 and the Achilles area were more flexible and not as swollen. I continued to see her for a year, and she completely regained all function and was pain free. When I think about SEL 16, this woman and the miracle we witnessed comes to mind.

Sixteen is transformation, which is the basis of all human activity. The Oxford Dictionary defines transformation as “the action of changing in form, shape, or appearance, metamorphosis; a complete change in character, condition, etc.; change of energy from one form into another”. With its relationship to the Mediator and 3rd depth, 16 is a powerful influence for change, action and metamorphosis in our lives.

In reflexology, the area around our lateral ankle is associated with the ovaries and testicles. This is consistent with SEL 16’s use in harmonizing all reproductive needs, especially menstrual projects (see Special Body Function Energy No. 2).

Waltraud Riegger-Krause on SEL 16

Waltraud Riegger-Krause has insight to offer us as respects her experience of Safety Energy Lock 16 in issue Number 19, Winter 1997/1998;

With Safety Energy Lock 16, we enter the 3rd depth. It is the foundation of all our undertakings, the basis of all human activities.

To me this means: 16 as the first Safety Energy Lock that is manifested in the 3rd depth has a big influence upon our actions in life. With SEL 16 we can break old habits, old thought patterns, old emotional hurts and our attitude patterns in which we are caught, and transform them into new ones. The new ones will create our future activities. Physically 16 helps to break down old tissue in the body, like scar tissue and hard muscles and allows them to get soft again. It regulates the muscle tone and releases cramps in the body.

16 means TRANSFORMATION. By taking away the fear, 16 helps us to be aware of what is not real in us, of what is artificial and doesn’t belong to our true Self anymore. All which has accumulated in our Personality and is not true anymore will be cleaned and transformed by 16. So, we can come closer and closer to the true nature of our Self. If our awareness changes, WE have to change also and drop our old attitudes, habits and body structure. That’s why 16 helps the reproduction and bringing forth of new life. It helps fertility, to get pregnant and to nourish the uterus during pregnancy.

16 clears the 20’s, which helps to clear our mental attachments and to get rid of thoughts that create headaches. 16 smooths a swollen upper eyelid and opposite jaw projects such as TMJ or swollen gums.

16 changes problems into projects and fear into FUN.

Together with 17, 18, and 19, 16 assists in a very powerful flow that connects the Supervisor and the Mediator flows and harmonizes spirit, mind and body.

“What Mary Says,…”

I’m reading the Jin Shin Jyutsu Newsletter for Winter 1997/1998 because I’m going to blog about Safety Energy Lock 16 and, lo and behold! There is an article about this very book that I draw wisdom from and share with you, the reader…

“What Mary Says…”

Over the past two years, Lynne Pflueger and Michael Wenninger have been compiling quotations used by Mary Burmeister during her many years of teaching. Many of these are original quotations of Mary’s, while others were drawn from her personal study and research. The resulting book is a reflections of Mary’s unique insights and awareness.

The following has been extracted from “What Mary Says…” to highlight its purpose and intention.

Introduction by Michael and Lynne

Through the years Mary has spoken her wisdom and philosophy of Jin Shin Jyutsu to us through her lectures, hands-on and her process of using quotations to share the Truth. We all have used the expression, “What Mary says is…” as a way of expressing a particular point in discussing safety energy locks, understanding relationships and so on. Several of us have noticed recently that two or more people will have different variations of the same quotation. Since Mary no longer actively participates in Jin Shin Jyutsu workshops, at least not in the physical dimension, her quotations have started to change through people’s different interpretation of what she said. As we all know, two people will hear the same words and then write them down differently. Of course, whatever the person wrote down is what they wanted to know and learn anyway, so whatever Mary said to that person is what they were supposed to learn.

The purpose of the book then is to capture as closely as possible the essence of Mary’s teaching through the quotations she used. We have compiled these quotations from a variety of sources, conducted more edits than we even imagined possible and sent a draft to all the instructors for their review and comments. Although there may still be some valid differences, we believe this edition is close to her original intention.

In considering an appropriate title for this presentation, we discussed the thoughts of, “What Mary Says” versus “What Mary Said”. In listening to ourselves and others use Mary’s quotations, do we say, “What Mary Said” or “What Mary Says”. We believe she is always with us now. Since her words, thoughts and ideas are her legacy to us in our present awareness, we decided on “What Mary Says…” as a constant reminder from her that this precious moment is all we have.  (Michael Wenninger)

Over the years quite probably many of you who studied with Mary Burmeister got the idea to compile her sayings into a form to share with others. It took an Aries to bring this into manifestation. This project has allowed me to listen again to Mary and to immerse myself in her genius, wisdom, and playfulness. May the book allow all of us to bask in her Knowing presence.

At the conclusion of one of her classes Mary made the following statement, “Thank you and in Unconditional Cosmic Love I leave you physically and I am with you all eternally as One. May each of you discover the teacher within and Be the FUN.”  (Lynne Pflueger)

Susan Brooks on SEL 16

Susan Brooks shares her experience of Safety Energy Lock 16 in the Jin Shin Jyutsu Newsletter issue Number 19, Winter 1997/1998:

When Safety Energy Lock 16 comes to mind, so does the word “FOUNDATION”, which, according to Webster’s Dictionary, means “the supporting part of a house, base, etc.”…

A fun exercise is to see how each Safety Energy Lock (SEL) includes all the depths. 16 is the first SEL of the 3rd depth. The three face flows – Stomach (1st depth), Bladder (4th depth) and Gall Bladder (3rd depth) each descend the leg and move through the outer ankle (SEL 16) area. As part of Special Body Function No. 2 – 16 with low 8 – is a dynamic 2nd depth helper. As 16 helps the opposite 17 area (a Heart and Small Intestine Function helper) it helps the 5th depth. Because of its proximity to SEL 24, 16 also serves as a 5th depth skeletal system harmonizer. The Supervisors (6th depth) ascend through the 16 area and Mediators (6th depth) descend through there, explaining why the 16 is referred to as the bridge between the Supervisor and Mediator flows.

As a double 8, 16 brings magic, strength, and infinite vitality to the reproductive area.

On a physical level, the 16’s harmonize the 20’s helping frontal headaches. TMJ, jaw tension and teeth grinding can be helped by 16. Because of its role in breaking down the old and renewing, 16 is dynamic for scar tissue. Muscle tone is improved by holding 15. Any reproductive project is aided by the 16’s – prostrate, prolapsed uterus, ovaries, uterine fibroids.

Mary talks about 16 allowing us to convert our fears to fun; bringing us freedom and limitless possibilities. This transformative process clears the mind for effortless decision-making and brings renewal, self-confidence and stability.

Gassho, Namaste, Blessings

I’m thinking…

…the laughter of a child.

I’ve had my supper,
And had my supper,
And HAD my supper and all;

I’ve heard the story
Of Cinderella,
And how she went to the ball;

I’ve cleaned my teeth,
and I’ve said my prayers,
And I’ve cleaned them and said them right;

And they’ve all of them been
And kissed me lots,
They’ve all of them said “Good-night”.

So – here I am in the dark alone,
There’s nobody here to see;
I think to myself,
I play to myself,
And nobody knows what I say to myself; Here I am in the dark alone,
What is it going to be?
I can think whatever I like to think,
I can play whatever I like to play,
I can laugh whatever I like to laugh,
There’s nobody here but me.

I’m talking to a rabbit…
I’m talking to the sun…
I think I am a hundred –
I’m one.
I’m lying in a forest…
I’m lying in a cave…
I’m talking to a Dragon…
I’m lying on my left side…
I’m lying on my right…
I’ll play a lot tomorrow…

I’ll think a lot tomorrow…

I’ll laugh…

a lot…

Jed Schwartz on SEL 15

Jed Schwartz shares his experience of Safety Energy Lock 15 in the Jin Shin Jyutsu Newsletter, issue Number 18, Autumn 1997:

I had a new client whose groin area was like a sheet of raised steel from the pubic area to the hipbone. Holding the 15 and 6 (the first step of the 15 flow), I listened and waited while he began to doze off. Gradually life began to flow through this area, and I witnessed the melting away of this “stuck”.

Some time later while I continued the flow, my client awoke and began to laugh hysterically for about five minutes. Then he turned to me with surprise and confusion, saying, “I have no idea why I’m laughing.” And so it was. There was no reason for his laughter other than the letting go of years of stress. To his joy, he felt better than ever and left without back pain and with a smile. This friend gave me the gift of a deepening of my 15 awareness. He EXHALED from his head to his toes with each laugh, and then filled up with peace and freedom. Fifteen – pure subconscious, or personal Joy Giver.

Norman Cousins, in his book Anatomy of an Illness, writes about his journey toward healing. Seriously ill and without hope from western medicine, he found himself in the hospital, feeling worse that ever. Cousins came to the awareness that the healthiest and happiest times in his life were when he was joyous and filled with laughter, which wasn’t happening for him in the hospital. He checked out and filled his life with things that gave him joy and laughter; “positive emotions are connected to chemical changes”. Through joy and laughter, harmony began and then healing – a great example of the power of 15.

Fifteen means to wash our hearts with laughter”. In looking up these words in Webster’s, I found:

wash: to cleanse or purify spiritually.

heart: (1) the muscular organ…maintaining the circulation of blood; (2) the whole personality, including intellectual as well as emotional functions or traits.

laughter: audible expression to an emotion of joy by the expulsion of air from the lungs.

joy: a vivid emotion of pleasure arising from a sense of well-being.

So one could say 15 is cleansing or purifying the whole personality (intellect and emotions) through the expression of the pleasure of well-being through our exhaling.

(Cousins, Norman, Anatomy of an Illness, W.W. Norton & Company, 1979)
